A post from November 2023.Just on the subject of ‘Only You’, even though Alf didn’t write it she certainly is the voice of it, and Vince Clark is a Basildon boy so it’s as local as they come. Last season I’d say for over a dozen matches, I played the chorus immediately before kick off hoping it would catch on. A bit like Annie’s Song at Sheff Utd where the crowd then belt out ‘you feel up my senses’. I tried and tried but it never took off.
We have never had an anthem. 15 years ago the club ran a vote for a new anthem and ‘Bridge over troubled water’ won. This never took off.
I’ve played Three Little Birds just ONCE and it’s now got its own thread, it’s been sung at another game growing in popularity and fans are even wanting to buy merchandise linked to the song.
In my opinion, it is not an anthem and I feel our anthem is yet to come. One day, we will have an anthem that’s unique to us but until someone writes that song or changes one it’s not yet. However, Three Little Birds is a song that has the power to unite. As many people have said above, it’s well known, some feel it close to the heart with what’s been going on and what’s helpful, it’s easy to sing. We should all be for songs that unite the whole ground and this is one of them. At this moment in time it’s a win. Possibly not a forever song but certainly one that can stay with us and remind us of what we are and where we have come from.
Our fans are awesome, whether they sing every song or not. Once the stadium gets going it really is a cauldron of noise and if this song gets it going right at the start then that’s surely a good thing.
Back to Only You and I still play this at every game. It is played as the players walk around on their lap of honour and normally the second song in as players come past the South and approach the East.
Sadly I think Alfs Shrimper days are long gone. (Said with a heavy heart.)A post from November 2023.
It still stands…the recent Only You version already has the sentimental feeling with the video montage. Perhaps a burst of the chorus could arouse and unite the sound. It doesn’t have to be a full song rendition.
I tried reaching out to Alf during last season via Chris Phillips but heard nothing in return![]()
Keep playing it before kick and perhaps like the transition of TBV into the north bank it has a chance of becoming our anthem. There is evidence that the club would like us to don’t you think?A post from November 2023.

Indeed. How very date you!Oh for f**ks sake. Sorry for voicing an opinion
Get down and groovy.I don't think a club song needs to actually reference the club.
I've always thought we need a song that is repetitive and has a good rhythm bearing in mind our supporters tradional inclination to join up in lines to sing and dance. We also need a song that reflects we are a family club from a seaside town and we love fun and good times.
With this in mind I offer my suggestion for a club song - Sunshine day by Osibisa
It’s funny how people react, I made the comment I made in jest as it seems that criticism of Alf and her music is frowned on almost as much as Maher being criticised. Whether it’s cos she’s “one of our own” I’m not sure. I remember saying I thought the Corrs were **** (well not Bazza) in a Dublin pub once and was pretty much asked to leave or pick a window.Indeed. How very date you!
I also think it’s a cr@p song. Who cares? I’m sure Alison Moyet couldn’t give 2 sh!ts what you or I think of it.
It seems the club are pushing us towards ‘only you’ though, doesn’t it.It’s funny how people react, I made the comment I made in jest as it seems that criticism of Alf and her music is frowned on almost as much as Maher being criticised. I personally feel Only You is better than Blue but we could come up with much better anthems than both.
Yeah Only You seems to be popular. It seems the club are pushing us towards ‘only you’ though, doesn’t it.
Which window did you alight from?
You should have mentioned Pat Scully you fool!!!!Yeah Only You seems to be popular.
I finished my Guinness and walked out. I tried to win them over by steering the conversation to Barry Corr but they had no clue who he was, nor Southend United. My business there was done!
Very true! He was an international.. and a Dubliner to boot. And boot it he definitely could!! What I’d give for a player like him now.You should have mentioned Pat Scully you fool!!!!

But how do you make this “singable” on the terraces?
I just don’t see how it won’t sound like a car crash with a few blokes/kids singing it. Its not got that “anthem” flow or vibe to it.
