Promotion & Relegation 2024/25

Carlisle & Morecambe remain marooned at the bottom of Division 4.

Chester, Scunthorpe & Kidderminster head up the Conference North - still very tight with 4 points separating the top 5 teams.

4 teams all have 52 points in the Conference South - Boreham Wood lead Torquay on goal difference.
Now 5 teams have 52 points at the top after Maidstone’s draw at Chelmsford last night.

This thread is missing details re the candidates for League One relegation so we can suss out who we are likely to be playing in League Two next season.

You are either half barmy or on drugs (or medication) ......... but I praise your optimism; it is a beacon of hope shining through the fog of reality ............ [laughing face]

4 teams are adrift at the bottom of Division 3 (League One) - Burton, Cambridge, Crawley, Shrewsbury - then a 6 point gap to Northampton & Peterborough.

Thank you for the info. I object to being called half barmy though - that is just wrong, I am completely barmy (and oh so tired of the NL)

Well, here we are mid-March. What a long season it seems to have been so far - or is it just me?

In League Two, Morecambe & Carlisle are rooted to the foot of the table - then comes Tranmere Rovers, Harrogate Town & Accrington Stanley - all northern teams for next season.

Colchester United are in the last play-off place - what a change of circumstances there.

In the National South, Worthing are 4 points clear & have won their last 5 games. Only 6 points seperate the next 6 teams who are in the play-off slots.

In the National North, Scunthorpe are 3 points clear from Chester - it's all very tight.

I’ve been keeping a keen eye on the two National Leagues. Kidderminster have a strong chance of automatic promotion in North but it would be great to see Scunthorpe Back. Kings Lynn probably in play off mix up.Still struggling to understand how both Oxford City and Needham Market are in North, though the latter are going down.

The fight for National League South is insane. Soft spot for Torquay but it is wide open.

The geographical imbalance arises from the fact that clubs are not evenly distributed around the country AND don't move up and down Leagues in a similar manner.

To give a practical example, it is entirely possible that the four sides going down from the NL this season will be Ebbsfleet, Maidenhead, Fylde and Wealdstone. That is a 1:3 split between North and South, and accommodating these four in their logical best place means shuffling around some clubs situated in the geographical middle.

If that happens regularly - and I think it has, you will get some anomalous results. It partially explains why Oxford City, Needham and Hereford are all in the NL North.

The other factor is who comes down from L2 to the NL ; if you get an unbalanced card of clubs coming down from one end of the country over a period, that will also skew what happens in NLN and NLS eventually. There are only 48 clubs in those two Divisions and the choice of which League they play is binary.

NLS keeps on moving further south. Only three current teams are north of the M4/M25, Chelmsford, St. Albans and Hemel Hempstead. St Albans are relegation candidates, so it could be down to two next season. If Merthyr Tydfil get promoted from Southern League South, the chances are they will be placed in NLN. The alternative is to move either Hemel or Chelmsford in to NLN.

Back in our Southern league days we had regular trips to wales
1911 /12 we had Merthyr, Cardiff, Pontypridd, Ton Pentre, Treharris, Aberdare, Mardy and Cwm Albion

Thats 7 out of 13 away fixtures

The next year was even worse
Swansea, Cardiff, Pontypridd, Llanelli, Ton Pentre, Treharris, Mid Rhonda , Aberdare, Mardy and Newport

Thats 10 out of 13 , Us , Croydon and Luton had a lot of travelling ... We still managed to get promoted

Having thought about this a bit more, is it my imagination, or are less an less clubs from the middle of the country making it to the upper end of the non-league pyramid ? I count a fair number in NLN, hardly any in NLS (as already pointed out above) and Tamworth, Solihull and Boston in the NL itself.

Its an odd trend, i wonder if the National league have thought about expanding the North & South to create a North, Central & South. Central could be anything between north or the M25 to south of manchester and could have 4 leagues of 20 teams (would need another 8 teams to join). Maybe the loss of regular matches could be avoided with a enhanced playoff or better cups..?

How would you tally that with only 4 promotion spots though? Would create a bottleneck

Watching Col U on Sky. It’s half time and 0-0, they have had 1 shot (off target) all half. League 1 must be really afraid of either of these 2 teams if get promoted lol. Grimsby are current occupant of 7th and have already lost 15 games this season? Absolute dross this game played on a pitch which has more sand than the Sahara Desert. The quality of football and the pitch really is substandard for the Football League.
