Always thought Pompey were a bit like Millwall in terms of their support, always had a reputation back in the day. No one round pompey supports another team either. The last few years seem to have brought out a bit of a siege mentality, good luck to them.

Pussycats today compared to what they were like in the 70's and 80's when their 657 crew were at their peak. I remember when they came here in 1981 (i think) firstly in the League Cup, then in the league when they filled the Spread before the game. Same day a mob of them came in the North Bank, got bored and at half time all brazenly walked across the pitch to their vast following in the South Bank. Needless to say the 'Old Bill' did nothing.
Then before the end, they came round the back of the West Stand and kicked down the big gates to swarm back into the North Bank.
Bearing in mind where they are located in the UK, i hold complete respect for their away support from years ago. Any club who takes 10,000 fans to Liverpool for a midweek League Cup tie, and the same number to man Utd, Sunderland, and Bradford City for the game that saw them win the old 2nd or 3rd Division a few years back were something special.

I remember that visit back in 81/82. Recieved a royal kicking at their hands in the North and again while licking my wounds on the corner of East Street and Victoria Avenue. Strangely enough, I hold little malace against Portsmouth and have always held a level of respect for their fans and the 657 Crew even though they knocked several shades out of me.

Just noticed this on the Pompey forum: "Southends fans are pathetic. Looked like a boys choir all stood in a little square with some fat plonker trying to coordinate them, all dressed in Ralph Lauren clobber. As soon as they heard us sing near the start they gave up and went quite. Pfft"

Only one thing to say about that. 2-1.

When we were at Fratton Parkt the Pompey fan with the bell came over to our coach as we were waiting to leave the ground after the game and congratulated us on playing well and wished us all the best.Seemed a nice enough bloke and a real loyal fan.

remember 82, after the away game at portsmouth, myself, john "the hat". and one other,i think stamford joe, had a "rumpus" at waterloo station with some london based pmouth fans.they started on us,but still got a lot of respect for pompey fans..hope they stay in the league

Remember going to pompey in early 90s on paul holland coach, paul knew pompey john and we met up.he took us in his local pub near the ground which we would have never have got near without him.theyre were some real hard looking blokes in there but we had no bother. About 6 months later saw same pub on ross kemps britianstoughest pubs The guy is a bit eccentric but is a proper fan of the club.he lovesh

Not accepting that, Trueblue cant afford that kind of clobber :winking:

Thought they sounded quiet from where I was sat (block T in the West) but then you don't tend to hear the away fans much from there, especially if TBV are singing which drowns them out. They didn't have much variety in their singing and a group of their fans seemed to spend the whole match gesturing towards our kids in block W rather than watching the football. Not a great number either considering we only brought 200 less than that to theirs on a Tuesday night, but I guess it's just after Christmas and it's not a particularly wealthy area. It was still good to see a proper away following in the North Bank, all standing up and contributing to a good atmosphere.

I work with a guy that picks and chooses his games and he made his SUFC debut on New Years Day. He went to the sea front did the full english malarky and said that he thoroughly enjoyed his experience apart from the low blow late on in both halves. He seeemed to enjoy his day out regardless.

What else are you going to buy your kids for Christmas? Nothing wrong with a bit of Ralph Lauren!

Chap from work said he was impressed with the quantity of Southend fans and the atmosphere in general.

Our crowd v Portsmouth was the 2nd highest away crowd they have played in front of so far this season. Only Plymouth have had a higher crowd 8,742 (1,405 away fans).

Second that, Westwood may be somewhat eccentric in some fans minds, but he is a true fan and was never involved in any aggro in the 'old days'.
When we were relegated in 1997 we played them here on Easter bank Hol Mon ko 7.45pm, and they were challenging for promotion. I was in the Nelson pre game, which was packed out with Pompey. Westwood was with some real 'bruisers', but started chatting to me and came across as a decent bloke. We parted with a handshake and went on to win 2-1, which unfortunately did neither team any good at the end of the season.

saw Pompey at ipshite about six years ago as some visiting pompey relatives came to stay. The tractor tossers won easily but no one was watching - instead all eyes were on Westwood who for the whole of the second half bounced up and down on the roof of an exec box in front of the away support ringing his bell and orchestrating the pompey fans. Neither they or Westwood let up in song for one moment, it was first class support that I just had to admire. The coppers wanted him to get off the roof but he declined, knowing they would not touch him and risk the roof coming down with the extra weight of more folk on it. At the final whistle he took a bow and went straight to the coppers who seemed to just have a bit of a joke with him and let him go. Brilliant.
