I know its been said before so many times recently this season, but to an extent, this is a must win game for us.

If we lose or even draw with Port Vale, could see us dropping to 9th place (and possibly 10th with Bradford's game in hand). Especially if you take into account our goal difference.

It seems the other teams (both closely above us & below us) have easy fixtures this weekend on paper at least.

Millwall (5th) V Doncaster (17th)
Coventry (6th) V Fleetwood (20th)
Sheff Utd (8th) V Rochdale (16th)
Bradford (9th) V Blackpool (18th)

This is not a must win game (other than any game is a must win!), a point would be a good result given their home record, the two home ganes against Crewe and Chesterfield are the must win games. 6 or 7 points from those 3 games would be a good return.

Well, you can take my name off the list - I was planning to go before the nose started to run, the joints are sore, I keep sneezing and my head is throbbing. Yes - full blown man flu so sitting in the cold for 2 hours is not going to help.

As said above, why change the team? It was changed for Scunthorpe and Bradford with the result of no goals and no points and then changed again for Burton when it seemed to go okay.

But Port Vale do seem to have an impressive home record this season ............
Pah, no excuse to not watch the mighty Shrimpers! :winking:

A few hot Toddy Tod's and you'll be right as rain. A good old rendition of 'we all follow the southend' will warm you up too! You know you want to see Antony Grant stylishly winning 100 free kicks!

Yes - I do want to see Granty - he got a good round of clapping from me at the home game but he didn't seem quite the player from a few years earlier. Perhaps we just kept him quiet.

And going back to that home game, I seem to remember that it was quite tight but overall we deserved to win. Quite happy with a repeat of that again on Friday.

got a half day at work & hotel booked in stoke(!), not been to Port Vale before so anyone any recommendations on pre match boozers?

Apparently there's loads of pubs nearby - The Post Office Vaults has been recommended, or this from one of the Vale forums:
Walk down from the ground if you're arriving there, and just into the centre of Burslem. If you carry onto the square, The Bull's Head is one of your best bets, accepts away fans, decent ales etc and has a BBQ before most games.

Very slow traffic around Luton on the M1 at the moment, for those travelling.

Source : Mate of mine, on his way to the game.

Wait until you get on the M6 with its intelligent motorway tricks, lucky if you get above 35mph for miles. The M6 junction with M5 is real fun on Fridays. At least it is dry but freezing cold with clear skies, wrap up warm for this one. Pricey too.

Is Hunt not fit or have you left him out of the team and squad on purpose?

Oooops - just seen the article on Hunt's baby aspirations ........

Port Vale don't let in many goals at home, and have only lost once there this season. So a very hard task to get the win. But, this is Southend. If Barnett gets some good service, and Bolger and Barrett block everything, and Bentley saves anything that does get through, we can do this.

Hunt probably wont play as 1st child is due today

I did think when Mooney was piping up about playing as a 'proper number 9' it meant Hunt wouldn't play in this game. Low and behold the next day we hear that Hunt may not play because of his imminent child.Come on Moons do some 'proper number 9' magic!

not too much of an ask then:unsure:
