I can't help but feel worried about that quote about trying as hard as possible signings players and that he couldn't do more. Is he signalling that he is not going to be able to bring anyone else in that he wants?
No he's just trying to divert the blame from himself onto Ron

I wasn't at the game yesterday, but listened on the radio - which was bad enough! We have a lot of talented players in yesterday's team so we really shouldn't be losing 2-0 to average sides like Port Vale :'(

Having seen major underperformance in many talented teams at work caused by poor leadership or the team members not buying into the vision, the fact that good individual professional footballers are not playing as a cohesive and motivated unit signals to me that all isn't well behind the scenes. That stops squarely at the managers door. We have a number of creative players that seem to have had this beaten out of them - the biggest examples I am thinking of right now are Leonard, Coker, Barrett and Cox (who worryingly only arrived a few weeks ago...!).

PB was heard very eloquently defending himself yesterday, saying that we need more players in the squad and he can't get them on board. Has he considered that some of the people he has been trying to tempt have taken one look at our tactics and lack of creativity and decided to go somewhere else...?? I have said this before, and I still believe this to be the case - the problem isn't with the current squad, either in quality or numbers. What is a problem is that the shackles are on the team, and they are so busy trying to implement the 'clean sheet' mentality that we can't attack with any purpose and as soon as the midfield starts to wobble the floodgates open up and we are shipping them in from everywhere. Fundamentally, unless there is a massive shift in thinking and tactics towards a 'we need to score more goals than the opposition' focus and stop worrying about conceding, we are relegation fodder. Much as it pains me to say that.

Port Vale were not average. They were dreadful.

Interesting that 19 hours after the game ended nobody who was there has posted their comments and player ratings.

Are they all spending the rest of the weekend enjoying the Potteries or have they taken one look at the league table and committed suicide?.:winking:

I wasn't there, so hard to judge on the radio - but if they were that dreadful and we lost to them what does that make us... :'(:'(:'(

I think its gonna be a very long tough season!

I was there. They could barely string three passes together all afternoon.

They were awful, we were beyond awful. No team spirit, tactics or cohesion.

What I don't understand is that I criticise Barrett and get met with a volley of poo. Other people have FINALLY seen the light and not one comment contrary to their opinions.

Liistening to commentary whilst doing a fair in the claustrophoblc heat of Saint Girons yesterday afternoon. One of the commentators was amused and surprised about how AB keeps getting away with his embraces. According to him, at one time, AB had both arms around a Vale player who was too quick for him and hauled him to the ground!
Could someone explain to me what happened with commentary on BP yesterday? I asked my wife to put it on as usual at 3pm (gmt) and the game didn't start until 3.45.............was there a different KO time for some reason or did the commentary have a three quarters of an hour delay???

It was working fine (too well in fact) on this side of the Pyrénées .:sherlock:

Oh dear.Just seen the (10 minutes 40 seconds) match highlights on BP.

Slack defending Blues. For both goals but especially on the second from a corner.

We must learn to take our chances when we're on top.

The midfield gave the ball away far too cheaply and were slow as old boots in possession.

Try being there for 90 minutes. Awful. By the way, anyone else see the spat between Demetriou and Sokolik after the first goal? Faces in each others, pushing and shoving. Handbag stuff, but disappointing.

Sorry to say but it's been a while that I realised ... If he loves the club so much maybe he needs to realise as well, stick a fork in him he's done

Have just managed to see the goals from yesterday and I have to say it is not the goal scored against us that is worrying me (well part of me does) it is the body language of the players that is of most concern. Heads down, arguing with each other they already look beaten. This needs to be sorted as we all know you have to still confidence in people in order for them to perform and sadly SUFC are very much lacking in this department at the moment

Same problems as last season .We was ment to have improved our squad but where has it improved .A half decent striker in cox but without any service he cant do anything Maglashen wasn't good enough for Gillingham so is he any better in our team no .Nile ranger still has not kicked a ball in anger because our coaching team say he is not ready or so phil brown said yesterday .And are we going to see any new faces .I doubt it who would honestly want to come to a struggling league team .

Here is a match report ...... I think .......... although it might just turn into a moaning session.

The first half was a pretty turgid affair - both sides cancelling each other out and working hard - although I think we (Southend) were working harder than Port Vale. Grant was there in the centre pulling the strings, taking the ball off the defence, turning with the ball and distributing it with almost 100% accuracy.

And then with about 40 minutes gone, the Port Vale goal seemed to live a charmed life. The goal was at the other end so quite difficult at times to judge quite how close things are but it seemed like a goal poacher like Blair Sturrock ( ) would have been in his element.

Port Vale break and a lovely cross is met by a lovely header. Oxley had no chance and cue pushing and pointing between Socko and Demmy. 1-0 down at half-time was harsh but that is the way it goes sometimes.

And miraculously, Southend come out in the 2nd half and give it a real go - Mooney chases down opponents, players are getting forward, crosses are coming in. At one point the Southend fans are on their feet as the ball spins as close as a close thing to the goal line but neither the linesman or the referee think the ball has crossed the line. But somehow it is all rather poor football but does anyone care when you are chasing an equaliser and your first points of the season?

And then Port Vale break, a corner and another goal. Thereafter Southend offer nothing. We were already playing a rather direct style of football (you know, like you get in Division 4 ) and the midfield were reduced to chasing Vale players as Vale attempted to keep the ball and play it around.

Taking the game as a whole we did not do enough to deserve a draw. The substitutes offered little and were no improvement on the players that went off.

There is a fine line between success and failure .......... but I'm not sure that we are that close to that line. Vale had a degree of self-belief that seemed to be lacking with us - something that I thought was a factor at the Gillingham game as well.

And there is a lack of calm and skill when it comes to the final third of the pitch. We had attacks and crosses but it was more a case of "put the ball anywhere in the box and let's see what happens" rather than a ball into a dangerous area knowing that is what player X or player Y thrives on.

Overall, there was no lack of effort from each individual ........... but I'm not sure that the individual pieces that we have make a cohesive working team. Perhaps that might change with the return on Wordsworth and Tims and having Nile available as well.

Awful yesterday, the lack of fight is scary. Losing to Port Vale who are one of the relegation favourites is a very worrying sign.

I live in Morecambe so only had 2 hour drive. I have driven further to watch worse Southend performances and we are not as bad as some people are saying. Here is my assessment of our issues.
1/ Tbe moral must be low and this stems from leadership. Our bad run started last season around the time when Brown was linked with Bolton and now England. Maybe hes struggling to focus. We also lack it on the pitch with not even AB seeming to rally the troops.
2/ We have 2 potentially great goalscorers and Mooney and Williams who are lucky to even touch the pitch. We need a striker and use Mooney and Williams as backup.
3/ We need a leader and bolefully Tims will provide this. We also need a couple of gifted hard working midfielders who will take people on and cause space for the rest of the team. Lengthy passing spells only give the opposition more time to get their shape back.
4/ Surely some person needs to shoot. Its frustrating that we either hump it long to people useless at heading or just keep endlessly passing. For Gods sake shoot.
5/ 2 new centre backs please. Sokolik was good, Demetriou was woeful from positioning to crossing. Barrett was steady. Coker ok.
In the match we competed well and should have won. We had chances. We made mistakes. Get over it. A different day and we would have put early chances away. We give ourselves a better chance with more quality players signed to do this otherwise we have to persevere with what we've got. What we dont need is a few mindless rectums singing negative chants in these tough times. I love this club and have followed them through all the **** years. These are the golden times so lets try and help them make the most of them
