Piers Hatcliff

should this thread now be in Ex Shrimpers then?
Dont believe he ever played a game in our 1st xi or came on as a sub, so no hes not a past player , if he was i and many other youths would also be deemed as past players , i myself represented SUFC back in 1961/62 playing for the youth team. Some even played in the reserve side back then, My friend Mickey Wright being one as he was an apprentice pro back then under Ted Fenton .

He is an ex Shrimper.

Plenty of players who didn’t play a single game for our first team who are in this thread. Players like Isaac Hayden, they were on our books as youth players so are ex shrimpers.

I think he and/or his agent felt that his best opportunity to succeed in the game came elsewhere, which is sad after he had spent a decade with the club. Time will tell whether that is the case or not.

I have a fair amount of sympathy for that cohort of players; they were pressed into action for the youth team in the second half of the 2022/23 season when the club’s scholars went on strike, then the loss of Academy status meant they couldn’t be offered scholarships for 2023/24 as we moved into the National League U19 Alliance and a more education-based programme (albeit trying to replicate an elite programme as much as possible).

In the summer, he’ll’ve seen one contemporary, Beau MacDonald, earn a professional contract with Blues, and another Aidon Shehu, trial and earn a deal at Hull City. Then he (and others) featured in the first couple of pre-season friendlies.

That was the sweet spot for his attributes to be pushed towards league clubs and try to earn a scholarship/pro contract. So he had a choice between playing the long game here at Southend United, seeing if his performances for the U19s and potentially on loan got him a deal here in the next couple of years, or hawking himself around to get himself back into that league environment quicker.

Obviously he went on trial at Barnsley, then Sheffield Wednesday were rumoured to be interested, now West Brom are being linked, but so far he’s registered for Hullbridge Sports and a West Ham United Foundation team that were beaten 6-3 by our U18s/shadow squad a couple of weeks ago.
