D'you know what, I looked at that photo twice and thought that must be a training session shot, but that's actually a match!

I know we were dire around that time, but forgot how bad our crowds were.

Looking at the attendances towards the end of that season, we barely mustered 1,500 for home games!

Great stuff. Thank you. I didn't know about that site.

I think I've dated that photo.

Looking at the time of year and the fact It's a day game, when most matches were Friday night, I'd say It's the Easter Monday home match on 8th April 1985 against Hereford United (0-0 draw).

It fits with the players in the photo and the kit of the oppo player, bottom right.

Yes it was April 85 and did finish 0-0, I'll have to dig out the other photos!

What this thread needs is a picture of one of the mods with Chris Powell, taken in Cardiff. Can't imagine that has ever happened though.

.... and that is the last time we failed to beat Hereford in a match at Roots Hall and at 2,133 that was comfortably the largest of our last 10 home gates of that season !!!!

Yeah, but who refereed the game, and how many yellows?

Yep, those crowds were woeful, though sandwiched in-between was an away game at Tranmere with just 1,082 there!

Actually, a reflection of the times, the whole season home or away the crowds were dreadful.

The vast majority being lower than 2,500 anywhere, with plenty hovering not far above 1,000.

The largest, all season, being 5,007 at Hereford United on New Year's Day.

Of course, the following season was the infamous 683!

I sent it to SUFC_History (@SUFC_History) a great site with plenty of nostalgia, worth a follow.

Cheers Geoffrey I didn't know Dave & Peter had a SUFC history twitter account. That's a good way of getting in touch with them for any historical SUFC questions as I don't think they post on here.

Compare your South Bank photo with a photo from their site - south bank.jpg
Almost an identical view minus a few thousand people. I couldn't put each picture side by side can anyone do that?

If you go on the twitter site you get a bigger picture, is that 2 people bunking over the South Bank wall at the back?

Yeah, but who refereed the game, and how many yellows?

Mike Dimblebee, from Bicester. This was about the middle of his eight year spell as a League referee.

His biggest claim to fame is probably refereeing the infamous match between Wimbledon and Newcastle, when Vinnie Jones grabbed Paul Gascoigne 'between the legs' a fact well recorded in a photograph of the incident.

Linesmen, as they were called in those days, were G. Rigby and A. Rogers.

Bookings ? Haven't a clue.

To get a larger picture, you can also just right click on the pic and click on 'open link in new window' and then click 'view' and 'zoom', although it's not 100% as good a quality as the original pic on the twitter site.
