The Business
Seems a bit unfair in a way to single out one player for praises after I just witnessed 11 heros out on the pitch but.............

Clarkey today put in one of the single handed best perfofmances I have seen in a Blues shirt for years.

I cannot even begin to count how many times he won his header, calm under pressure, his reading of the game, all round play and just a real passion to be playing for us.

I now realise why some Blackpool fans claimed to have handed back there season tickets. I think we mugged them off for £250k or whatever it was.

He doesnt grab the headlines as much as others but I reallly feel he is as important as Flavs, Maher, Freddy etc in our fight to stay up.

His improvement has been fantastic!!

When we signed him, he was ****, no question!!

Now, he is one of the first names on the team list, amazing every game, cool, calm, collected, a real leader!!

WE ARE STAYING UP!!

very true, he has improved so much and no wonder he was a fan favourite at blackpool with the impression he is making with us at the moment!

When we signed him, he was ****, no question!!

He was being played in midfield and it is clearly obvious he wasn't a midfielder. Put him back in his proper position and you've seen the results from it. He was sh*t in midfield, but he wasn't just plainly sh*t when we signed him. I think finally some people are grasping that, but it appears one or two still have not...!! :thump:

As soon as he moved out of a Hotel and into his own place his form improved . He now looks a real rock and a hell of a bargain . On a similar theme I beleive Richie Foran is living in a Hotel still so if the same rule applies lets hope he gets sorted soon too.

Billy Paynter was still living in a hotel... Yet nobody around is willing to give him the time of day like Clarke has been. Now that Clarke has been given time to adjust and settle into the area, you've all seen how much of an improvement theres been in his performances.

It's just a shame the pathetic boo boys won't give Paynter the same time...

do we think he will get another chance?

If we stay up? No. If we go down? Possibly.

He was immense for Port Vale in League One and i know a lot of fans were dismayed to see him go, this was swept under the rug as such because of the great form of Constantine and Sodje.

If we stay up, We'll be in a position to get better players and although Eastwood will go, as i would expect Bradbury to lose his place as well, I just don't think Paynter would fall into place. Hopefully though, Over the summer Paynter settles in, has a great preseason and hits the ground running for our next competitive season... Because i hate the thought of losing the best part of £250k because our fans wouldn't let the boy settle.

i just thought he looked a very lazy player. i think i would like to see him again just to give him one more try. but he didnt do anything whilst he was here though to be fare

It's not his game to run after every ball and chase every lost cause, His game is all about recieving the ball and holding it up before either turning the player or slotting it through to an oncoming midfielder (Macca, who we didnt have when Billy was here) or his partner striker (Ideally, Eastwood).

What i did see when he played was some intelligent balls that, if someone was on the end of, would be golden oppurtunities for a goal. However, the team weren't on the same wavelength... but that can only come through understanding and playing with eachother.

Agree 100% Dave as I pointed out on the Simon Francis thread. Saw ya there today.

Yeah but Nicky Nicolau is great!

He did not play in midfield when we played west brom away and he loked like a rabbit in headlights for their goal!!

His first handfull of games at centre back he was **** too, im not counting the midfield games

Exactly. Clarke played centre-back against Derby at their place too and put in the single worst performance I've seen from a Southend defender since David Morley.

He was top-notch yesterday though.

One thing I will add about Paynter. Paynter was playing for us at the time when the team were low on confidence and results were going against us. It would be interesting to see how Paynter would play in this team now, given the marked improvement in confidence all over the pitch.

That is a very good and very fair point . IMHO , however , he is still not above League 1 status . Good luck to him as I am sure he 's a decent lad.

Clarke still drops a real clanger every game - its just in recent weeks he's got away with it.

I was more confident at half time than I would normally be in that situation as both Francis and Clarke had got their standard gift of a goalscoring opportunity out the way.

Clarke was incredibly lucky that the Ipswich player took a dive when Clarke recklessly dived in. Had the Ipswich player stayed on his feet Clarke was already committed and their player would have had a clear sight on goal.

Francis similarly nearly undid all his good work (of which there was much) with some truly horrific defending which Ipswich also failed to make the most of.

I think our most important defenders are actually Sodje and Hunt, as those two rarely make errors in dangerous positions.
