Penalties

Was thinking the other day that we haven't had a lot of penalties this season. In fact we've had just one in the NL.

Decided to check the stats and saw that Gateshead are top with 12 - 11 of which have been converted - all by Luke Hannant who C*lchester and Proud has already warned us to be on the lookout for. They got 9 in the previous season and Hannant scored all the ones he took

Made me wonder, is it our style of play that doesn't lead to us getting penalty awards ? Or do we not harangue the ref enough?

We don't even seem to get many direct free kicks just outside the box despite having players such as LCP, KAF, Bridge and Coker, all capable of runs into the box.

Also in a separate table I saw only Rochdale have fewer yellow/red cards this season.

PS the link can take a little while to open

Personally I don't think we attempt enough direct runs into the box from wide or central areas. LCP/KAF are about the only ones that really attempt it.

I think we rely too much on crosses into the box. A lot of which aren't great deliveries and come from deep. Plus of course our strikers haven't exactly been great at converting chances either. This means we just aren't getting into enough dangerous situations where trips and handballs are a regular occurrence. I'd like to see this addressed over the summer with an addition of a winger or CAM who loves driving at defenders making them back up towards their own goal, nothing more. That plus obviously someone who can score 20+ goals should make us a bigger threat attacking wise next term and in turn put us in more situations where pens can be won.

Just my view anyway.

My big worry is that we could lose a play off game via a penalty shoot out. One of the major problems this season has been the lack of players who can finish. The ball striking of quite a few is not desisive. GSM is a great finisher with firm hard hit shots but there are not many others.
However I am sure the management team will hold practice sessions.

Good points but my bigger worry is that we might not reach the play-offs - especially as Gateshead seem very adept in getting penalties in their favour (and we don't)

Think it’s somewhat of a statistical anomaly as we’ve had 3(?) penalties in the cup this year and Bridge scored a fair few penalties last year.

However we do maybe lack that extra pace to get to the loose ball in the box just before our opponent. A lot of penalties come from the unstructured element of play where it’s two players reacting to a loose ball and if the defender gets there second it’s a penalty. Where it’s an attacker running at a defender most defenders, even at this
level, are disciplined enough not to dive in or leave a trailing leg but to hold their position. When the attacker isn’t in control of it is where you can get them to dive in and if you’re fast enough to get there first that’s when you win penalties.

1 Pen in the VNL, 2 in one game in the FA Trophy

I think a proper pre-season, fit and firing LCP will be our #10 doing this.

However a left footed equivalent of GSM would help too...
