Barry Corr should never take another penalty for Southend , maybe if he was playing against us it would be okay ,but never for us .:hilarious:

I don't want to see Corr taking pens in matches any more but he'll still be in our top five if it comes to a shoot-out. I reckon Barrett will put himself forward too.

Leonard and Timlin both look to me like they'd take good penalties.

Corr should be removed from penalties full stop. I think he missed one at Accrington first day of the season too? 3 misses in a season suggests that he is not the best person. Coker/Timlin/Leonard/Barrett/Payne/Bolger - all confident strikers of the ball IMO.

I'd have Corr taking one but possibly not the first, ease the pressure on him a bit.

I'd go Leonard, Corr, Payne, Weston, Coker assuming they're all on the pitch at the time

Barney on the bench then if pens are likely to decide a game!
Didn't he miss one in a shoot-out against Wimbledon this season? Or am I imagining that?

Total no-brainer for me. I've always thought penalties should just be smashed at goal, Julian Dicks style & Lenny definitely has the power & accuracy to replicate such penalties. I distinctly remember Beckham's pen against the Argies back in the 2002 WC, and even though he smashed it straight down the middle, it simply had far too much power & pace for their keeper to even react. In fact, IIRC, the ball was already in the back of the net, before he'd managed to react?

Sorry chaps but I'd have to disagree. Lenny can definitely hit a ball, but he's still very hit and miss with shooting. If you're going for power, you really want someone who can hit it with force, but still with control (Glenn Murray is brilliant at this). I don't think Leonard is quite that good yet, as some of his shots at times can be very wayward. I just get the feeling that he'd miss the target on quite a few by trying to lace it.

Personally my five would be:

Corr, Payne, Worrall, Coker, Timlin.

Tims last as I think he's the one I'd trust the most in a pressure situation to still take a good penalty.

Coker and Barnard had penalties saved at AFC I think

Leonard's shots may sometimes be wayward when htting a moving ball from 25 yards out. But a dead ball from 12 yards out is a completely different scenario. I'd trust him much more than Corr, as good as Barry is he's already proven twice this season that he can't score an important penalty under pressure. And i don't think a play off final is the place for us to be letting him try for 3rd time lucky.

I see what you're saying, but you could also argue that the playoff final isn't the best place for letting Leonard try and take one under pressure for the first time. In all honesty, I'd be more than happy for either of Timlin or White to take the penalty that carries the most pressure. You can practice them in training until the cows come home, but handling the pressure in the heat of the moment is a whole different ball game.

Hasn't Barrett taken them before as one of the nominated 5 or am I mis-remembering?

I remember AB taking one during his short time at Crystal Palace in a penalty shoot out in cup match and missing. His shot hit the post as I recall. Cannot think of a time when he took a penalty for us however.

Penalty taking is all about feeling confident enough to step up and take responsibility for the task in hand. It doesn't matter if you can hit a decent dead ball shot or not if you cannot cope with the pressure that a Wembley shoot out will bring. Surely the five who will step forward if needed should be those who "have enough bottle" and confidence to back themselves to score if the situation comes down to it.

Exactly this. I'm sure they'll be practising in training so only Brown and the players will know who is the best at penalties and who isn't any good. On the day it'll come down to who can hold their nerve as well, so threads like this trying to predict it are completely academic.
