Paul Sturrock interview

Lot of respect for the guy but I don't think I've ever known why he is called "Luggy"

Can anyone confirm?

We talk rightly about Maher and his achievements, but honestly does not hold a light to what Paul did for Rat and the club and the way he was released is still a disgrace
Without him , I seriously doubt we would have a club , or if so in some obscure division.
To me his achievement was maybe the greatest in club history with resources he had at the time .
And yes I have watched since late 60s seen promotions, relegation, great players great managers and yet to me we owe him more than thanks

Agreed.

Greatest achievement in my lifetime. Turning round a sunken ship in mere days. Incredible.

there’s a doc on BBC about him and apparently Dundee Utd’s left winger was called Luggy. When Sturrock replaced him he was called New Luggy then just Luggy and it stuck

Interesting 2023 BBC Scotland programme on Paul Sturrock ('Icons of Football'), with a brief Southend mention plus Graham Coughlan interview just after 21:30 minutes. Best to turn on subtitles as it can sometimes be hard to make out what Paul's saying, due to Parkinson's I guess. He's 66 now.

Just came across that programme by accident when it was offered up by the BBC iPlayer as a potential watch after the CL highlights.

An excellent programme, I didn't really know how good a player he was and how much he meant to people north of the border.

We were lucky to have him as a manager in yet another turbulent time in our history, and I wish him all the best in the future!
