Our players

I was wondering the other day in the bath, how good are our players, and what level do you think they could actualy play at??
Is there any you think that really stand out and could play championship or even Premier$hite standard?? Or do you think some would struggle if they wernt in the special team we have?
No digs at players here please

I dont see why Maher cant play at low Premier$hite level, his deliveries are great, vision great and defends well too.
Or is that just crazy?

Freddy could defo play in the Championship, and with more coaching and experience, could possibly play in the Premier$hite if he keeps his head down and works at it.

Mitchell Cole could play in the Championship, but again depends on if he continues to progress.

Maher, again could make the step up, but has his chance been and gone?

As for the rest?  Well, Prior and Edwards are on the way down (no offence intended) and the others could step up - maybe we will find out next season???

not sure about maher, his age will catch up with him in a season or too, no doubting he is a great player at the moment.
the following i would say would be fine int he championship if we got promoted:
freddy
smith
JCR
benno
gutts
gower
wilson
hunt
barrett

others are probably too old, and i really dont rate cole and i think gray will struggle against quicker, stronger defenders

I think Flavs is capable of holding his own in the Championship. I don't really rate Wilson and suspect he would be our weakest link by far in the starting line-up of the division above.

Agree that Wilson might struggle in the Championship against that extra bit of extra skill and pace, but I honestly don't see why most of the squad wont be able to hold their own!

I think most of the squad could just about play for a champion$hite side, albeit in the way Che currently plays 3rd division.

The ones who currently look to me like they are playing a division beneath themselves are Hunt, Jay Smith (when fit) and at times Eastwood (Goater was clearly a higher division player as well before his legs went).

I think the player who would struggle the most to make the step up would be Barrett, who found the jump from fourth to third difficult. I think his lack of height and pace would be further exposed a division higher.

Freddy, Gutts, Maher, Gray and Hunt have undoubtedly been playing well enough to make it in the Championship (as long as they maintained that standard). At their best I'd say Barrett, Bentley and Cole could but they're a little inconsistent.

So you reckon Wilson and Bentley would be fine at Championship level but at the same time you don't rate Cole!? Hmm.

This is a question that i've been pondering recently as well. When you look at most of our players they have been excellent finds, something that Tilly is great at. Its obvious that Eastwood could be a Premier$hite player although i've started to think he'd make a good winger. Maher definitely has the mental strength to be a good championship player and a great leader he'll always be. The rest i'm not sure. Barrett if he regains a bit of form would be comfortable in the Championship and with Guttridge, Cole and Lawson i reckon they're young enough to grow to be good championship players. As for the others Edwards maybe as he has proven it at level before and Campbell Ryce who has pace and ability to take on defenders could be an asset. To be honest if we want to be players in the Championship we're gonna need about 5 players! Firstly a decent left back.

For me - these could all get games at Championship level with one club or another:

Eastwood
Maher
Cole
Smith
JCR
Benno
Gutts
Gower
Hunt
Barrett
Flavs

Bottom line is that none of the players in our squad would be the worst in their position in the championship. And there are worse players than Freddy, Cole and Smith in the Premiership.

Maher would get destroyed, if you put any pressure on him he falls apart, which is why he is looking so good at the moment, he would not at a higher level. Wilson is struggling now, down is his way not up.

Freddy and Mitch could do it.

The only player i could see making it into a pre side such as Sunderland right now, is Luke Guttridge, this kid can go as far as he wants to.

When you look at some of the crap that clubs like Brighton have in there side it makes me think that we could cope more that adequatly.

I think Wilson,Bart,Petts,Jupp,Edwards & Prior would struggle to cut it above this level for various reasons of age or lack of ability.

With a few experienced heads in the Keith Jones mould I see no reason why we couldnt stay up in our first season and push on in our second.

Only one of those I disagree with is Bart, he's got different qualities than Flav's but was by no means out-classed by Flavs before his injury put him out of the squad last season.

And I'd add The Goat to you list on age grounds.

I'm not sure. I would really worry about our future if Tilly and Brush went, even if we had the same playing staff. Put them in another team with a different manager and coach and any may struggle as much as excel.

Sorry, just looked at the topic heading again and realised I answered the question incorrectly.

In answer to the question, Leeboy reckons Che goes all the way.

Gutts on current form could without question play at a higher level - I can now see why Charlton were after him for big money before he got injured.

Maher would also do a good job in the Championship - he'd revel in having more time and space (as he is this year compared to League Two last year).

In answer to this point I agree that much of the sucess we are experincing is due to Tilly and Brush being local lads and bringing a real feel of pride to the club.

If the unthinkable ever happended and they went I feel that we would at least be able to command a better standard of applicant.

I mean Wignall. Whitton and Steve Thompson last time. I dont think any of them are fit to fill the skivvy role in my office let alone Manager of a world famous football club.

Maybe a Cottrell type charecter would be more tempted now.

All this is of course irrelivant as Tilly will be here till he is 65.

Quote[/b] (Firestorm @ Oct. 12 2005,13:57)]Well
Maher, Gray, Hunt, Prior , Edwards, Goater , Jupp , JCR  have all played there already (Bart ?)
Bart played there for Birmingham under Judas.

Really it is purely subjective, when we went up to division 2 in 1991, i thought that there were many in the squad who would not cut it.

Dave Martin, Ian Benjamin (as much as he is an all time hero), Brett Angell, but they all did well.

At that time we had obvious class players like Chris Powell, Dean Austin, and Eagle & Spinner were coming through.

Webby made some astute buys in Andy Sussex & in particular Keith Jones and the rest as they say is history.

It is the sum of all the parts that makes a good team, therefore lesser lights can shine as brightly as the so called stars.
