If my calculations are correct - only once this season have we been a goal down at half time and then gone on to win - Northampton (who were total ***** at the time) away - final score 2-5.

Only in one other game, Wimbledon away, have we gone behind and come back to win (final score 1-4).

So this season's record tends to suggest that we win matches where we take the lead but otherwise are not too good at chasing the game.

Someone please tell me I've got this wrong :(

Thankfully we're starting from 0-0 in this individual game and don't have only 45 minutes to win it, but rather 90 (or 120 depending on scoreline).

Any statistics on coming back from a goal or two down are irrelevant in my opinion as the players won't be rocked by the situation, they've had enough time to get over it and we've got our game plan down to the tee I'm sure.

I think the records also suggest that we didn't often have to come from behind.

In contrast to that, we ourselves do the opposite since we've had Steve Davis in charge. So many late goals have come our way, before Davis if we went a goal down we struggled to get a result.

Statto here. We have come back from behind to win on two occasions, and come from behind to draw on two occasions, gaining 8 points. Only 5 teams have taken less points than us from coming from behind.

That's the whole point - we start on Wednesday chasing the game. Our success has been founded on taking the lead. On most occasions as others now confirm we have mostly lost.

Missing a small point in that we were away, and its two legs. We may not have come from behind often, but we never got a second game to try so that stat doesnt count for a lot.

On Wednesday we just need to win a game, thats all there is to it.

What I am worried about is not so much the statistics although they of course are the source of my concern. It is more the style of play and/or the tactics employed - we seem to struggle to overcome sides once we are behind.

I am sure PS is on the case but I just hope we are not under any illusions.

If we go behind on the night then I fear it will be game over but at the moment it's more about our ability to win at home by two clear goals - which we have done in last 4 games though admittedly we were under far less pressure in all of those. It's going to be one of those fabled tests of character

Paul Sturrock seems to be treating these play-off games as if they were an old-style European Cup fixture. So he was desperate to keep a clean sheet away, hopefully scoring on the break. A 1-0 defeat is bad, but recoverable. There will be a very different approach to Wednesday's second leg, although he may choose to start a little cagily to ensure that Crewe don't go ahead on the night, then ramp up a gear after say 25 minutes. I'm still pretty confiedent that we'll win the play-offs.

I pretty much agree with all of that. However there's something niggling at the back of my mind that earlier in the season PS commented that he was not a lucky manager and his sides didn't usually do well in cup competitons. That said, didn't he take Sheffield Wednesdy up through the play-offs a few years ago ?

Yep. The same season we went up through them.

Were going into the game needing a win, surely this is how we approach every home game throughout the season. If the defecit was more than 1 goal then we would need to chase the game but surely the approach would be first and foremost to win.

Yeah I agree with this. If we were more than just a goal behind then we'd need to chase the game. But with a single goal disadvantage I'd reckon that PS will tell the players to just go out and play their normal game and try and win the match on the night. Any win gets us to at least extra time. If we got the first goal then we might go up through the gears and who knows. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

A one nil win makes this a one leg semi final - in our favour - yu can afford to go into tomorrow night forgetting the first leg score and just go about your usual practice of winning a one off game. Teams at this level cannot defend one goal advantages for 90 mins!

We go in to it, 442, with the goal of collecting "three" points - the rest will sort itself out !

Saying that, an early goal wouldn't go a miss !

This is always a poor stat, as teams at the top have generally not gone behind too often.

We are not behind in the game Wednesday, it's just a game we need to win.

Add that to the TIE, and we will be at least level.

The players go into the game wanting to win. Simple as that.

There has been a problem in chasing a game and despite it starting 0-0 on the night...the longer it stays that way..the more we need to chase it. Thus my astonishment that we were so negative at Crewe.

Is an exciting prospect and previous statistics mean nothing at 7:45 tomorrow evening. I just wish we had gone for it on Saturday!!
