Opportunity lost?

Many years ago, I knew someone who played a decent level and wrote to Rob Newman asking for a trial. Buzz was one of the only managers to write back personally telling him we had some good right-wingers already, and thanks for the interest. Bring back Buzz.

I'm sure the club appreciate the sentiment and an acknowledgement would be nice, but the club is probably inundated with similar offers. There have been three offers alone on this thread already!

Pre-seasons tours are organised for the team's benefit not the fans'. If it was organised for the fans' benefit then it should be organised in Essex, so that as many fans as possible could attend. Sure I'd love to make a holiday of it, and a hundred or so fans would agree with me, but 2,000 fans would go to a home friendly.

Then there are the logistics of organising a tour, Eastern Europe may be cheap but you've still got to organise and research it. Will the opposition be suitable? They may be a higher quality than Canvey and Billericay, but will their style of football be appropriate? What about cultural difference - I loved the Anglo-Italian cup but it regularly resulted in a brawl and mass sendings off. We wouldn't want to start the season with half our team suspended! Or our star leftwinger in hospital after being attacked by a hammer. Finally, clubs owe it to the community they serve to go and play local lower level teams.

As for recommendations, the club must get hundreds of these every week. Would you even bother to check out this great opportunity from a mate of a bloke you met once down the pub but otherwise didn't know from Adam?

My recommendations were for:

1. A Malta international that helped keep Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga and was within our price range at the time and becoming a free agent.

2. A highly rated U-21 Malta international who impressed Newcastle enough to be invited to train with the club and have a serious trial (as well as gain interest from other clubs in Europe).

Hardly a bit of idol chit-chat from an outsider to some people in the club or beer talk in a pub.

Ah, but had you thought about the "Mony, Mony" and how much the players would cost...?

I did the same several years ago when we were in the old Division One with Peter Taylor in charge - PT wrote back personally too and said they'd have a look. The player in question dropped out of sight not long after so it was probably a **** tip, but fair play to PT for getting back to me.

:D

what about Bolton?

While on subject of Slovakia a reminder of Bolton's recent signings. They seem to be checking out talent here, why not SUFC? I accept points made that the team must be inundated with suggestions. But the Slovak lad I wrote to them about is a full U21 international. What harm in getting him over for a trial. What about sending a scout over here (Bratislava is 1hr 50 mins from Stansted) so travel time closer than Hull. AND I would even put whoever up, take them to whichever game etc. Would probably only cost £50 return for flight!

An update is that my colleage who raised this player with me is also a fan - of another team - he has heard back from his team and they are going to have a look at the lad!

"Bolton have completed the signings of Slovakian pair Lubomir Michalik and Zoltan Harsanyi from FC Senec.
Michalik moves to The Reebok Stadium on a three-and-a-half year deal, while Harsanyi has joined on loan until the end of the season.
The duo's arrival ends a frustrating time for Sam Allardyce, who has twice previously appeared close to strengthening his squad this month.
David Dunn was minutes away from signing before Blackburn's late bid and Fousseni Diawara had looked set to join on loan.
Slovakian international defender Michalik moves to Bolton permanently, with Allardyce believing the 23-year-old can have great success in the Premiership.
"I have been impressed with Lubomir. He has a great presence on the field and looks the part," Allardyce told the club's official website.
"He is good in the air and has all the right attributes to be a success at this level. He has had experience at international level."
Striker Harsanyi, 19, is seen as one for the future, but Allardyce is confident he has the potential to go far.
He added: "We have taken Zoltan on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent deal.
"From what we have seen, he has great potential and has all the natural ability to make it at this level. His pace and movement is very good and he likes to take on the opposition.
"He is one for the future and over the next few months we will get a good chance to assess him. "The two lads are for the future and over time will get used to the culture and life in the Premiership."

update

I received a call this afternoon from RM's secretary. She apologised for not getting back to me quicker but that the Slovak U21 had been discussed and they wanted to know about how they might be able to take a look at the player. RM was going to speak today with Tilly and see what he wanted to do.

I haven't heard back yet but i) was comforted by being called ii) am hopeful that the lad could come over to UK so the club can have a look at him.

How did Michalik play for Leeds at weekend by the way? Any good? I imagine must have come through the U21 ranks.

thanks for letting us know south247

hope they continue the feedback

cant remember Mchalik specifically but was he one of their centre halfs?

Looks like he played the full game as centre half: was booked in last 10 minutes.

Let's see what happens. Really think there is massive potential in Central Europe and if teams like Bolton can bring in raw talent then we should also be looking. I go to Romania in September for 4 years and am looking forward to seeing their players. Technically v gifted of course but not always suited to our game (latin temperment I guess)

great idea south247 and i hope this player is looked at but to b honest i cant seei happenin, weve got enough on our hands at the moment trying to keep championship status and i really cant see the club investing time and money into looking at a player who was recommended by a fan(altho you clearly have the clubs intrests at heart) gd luck tho!!! will u be expecting royalties if he does sign:angel:

ps wat position was he u may have sed this but i cant be bothered to read it agen?

He is a Slovak U21 Central Defender

I do believe that fans have a roll to play. OK we are not experts but if an opportunity presents itself then it does no harm to pass on.

This recommendation is slightly different as I was informed that the lad wanted to move on and that his club (a top division team in Slovakia) were not prepared to let him go to a rival team so I thought I would contact SUFC to see if they wanted to have a look at him.

We all know the UK market (like house prices) is inflated. Teams like Bolton shop around to get quality at vfm. Clearry SUFC are not going to have scouts in Central Europe so it is here I think fans/contacts can add some value.

It certainly wouldn't involve much in getting him over for trial. Alternatively, you can get to Slovakia from Stansted for 50 quid return - I would even put the scout up and take him to watch the lad.

There is nothing in this for me (certainly not financial) other than my love of my team, the possibility this could be a good young player that someone else is going to grab when we had the opportunity to do so.

There is so much talent abroad that is cheap - the average wage in Slovakia is 320 quid a month - that I think it is worth checking out. If fans have a role to play then we would be delighted to do so.

I'm still not sure I want to see a team full of Eastern Europeans wearing Southend shirts. We could take one or two overseas players but does anyone really want to watch a team of French and Spanish blokes running around while a Nigerian, a Jamaican, 2 Irish lads and a Scot warm the bench?

umm i fink NASA has confirmed that there are no viable species on the moon, even if they were wouldn't they need a work permit?

er Paul kent ur names joel clark ur a spurs fan and mi brother please go away ps there is nothing wrong with being a geek :)
