Only you

@bazzashrimper
Sorry but Alison Moyet (assuming that's who you were referring to) didn't write Only You.
Vince Clarke (born South Woodford) then of Depeche Mode (Basildon Band) wrote it before he and Moyet got together to form Yazoo.

Lots of local(ish) links but Moyet didn't pen this song.
Thanks for the correction, I didn’t know that.

But still - Moyet, a Southend fan, was a big part in the creation of the song as the singer. Still seems a no brainer to me. But hey ho.

Agreed Alf didn’t write it but she sang it and she is one of us. That’s the important bits.

This promo would have been much better with the original music

Noticed they played this at Wembley about 10 mins before the teams came out.

I think it could catch on. All it takes is for it to be played before the players come out or after a game and it will soon have people singing along.

I thought that worked out terribly. Oldham’s song got them all singing and partying. Ours went down like a lead balloon because 95% of those in attendance had never heard the song played in an SUFC context. A nice idea, poorly executed.

Maybe I’ve missed it, but have the club posted the full version anywhere at all? Or only the 1 minute clip on social media?

Wembley showed why we need something! What song did Oldham have? I cannot recall - but it stirred them for a line or 2 a couple of times during it.

I went to Anfield for a match last season. I was initially very disappointed with YNWA, it was just the song through the speakers - but the last chorus the crowd belted it out, made the hairs on back of neck stand up.

I don't know if only you will catch on, but we need something. Needs to be played at the start of game.

Trouble is, everything has had to be done in such a rush. We have the screen now at Roots Hall, where this can be played. I would LOVE to see and hear it every match.

Yeah - I can just imagine the panic when Wembley requested our iconic tune to play before players come out. They did well to sort something out.

I agree, Kay. Like so much at Wembley on Sunday, I think it depends where you were situated; plenty of people around me in Block 110 were singing along, but as everyone was spread out in such a large crowd, I can understand why others thought it didn’t get picked up.

I thought the pre-match montage this season on the screen was very good, but I would replace it next season with a new one accompanied by Only You to bring it into everyone’s consciousness.

Longer-term, I think my preference would be to use it immediately post-match in the same way Hibs do with Sunshine On Leith following a win. Seeing The Blue Voice belt out Only You as the players walk over to applaud the North Bank would be pretty special, I reckon.

Me and Rylee have been looking at doing something for a while. I'm about to go in and record the one I've written about the club called 'Blue Soul', I played it at Boxpark before the game on Sunday. Tried to get a lot of linkage to the town, places and the fighting spirit around the club. The version of 'Only You' is outstanding too. Whatever it is, agree we definitely need an anthem. I'll be putting mine out around the start of next season.
