OBL would you agree Timlin might have got minutes under his belt last night? For if Laird is injured for saturday Timlin might provide that exerienced body to slot in there.

I'm still not sure he's ready, I'd go with Leonard and Clifford myself. If we'd not been forced into subbing Bennett, then it might have been possible.

Pleased to read the generally positive reviews on here, it wasn't totally the impression I got from listening to BP commentary last night. They seemed to infer that the first-half was played more at the tempo of a training match, with one bit of class giving Yeovil the advantage. In the second-half we showed a little more intent but without the armory to hurt them and they didn't really need to get into top gear. Only in the last ten minutes did we seem to pose a threat to their goal and a mixture of near misses and good saves prevented us from equalising. Did anyone else listening to the commentary get a similar impression .................or was it just me???

Yes Leonard by the sounds of it did create a spark when he came on. Final question - Do you agree that Freddy may have been a better option instead of Coker thus leaving Straker at LB?

I was encoraged by the Aldershot moaning about Reid. This means he must have something about him. However most said he liked his grub and carried a bit of wood and was unfit. I think this is why he got a full 90 mins last night. One thing's for sure. He won't be unfit for long with the present regime and will be at least half a stone lighter by the end of the month.

You may have a point.

I think we're reading too much into the result of this competition. Take away our run in 2006-07 we have struggled in the competition. We've made the third round once - 2007/08, second round twice - 2009/10 & 2010/11, and been beaten in the first round the rest. We weren't going to win the comp, we rested some players and gave those who aren't match fit some important minutes.

The importance is Hartlepool and we have 3-4 players who have had a full week - or close to it - of rest.

If I was to read two things into the start of the season, 1 would be the defense which has been rock solid so far and the other would be our lack of scoring up the front.

Having said that we are two games into a season.

Plenty of time to go but the signs are looking much better than what they did a month ago.

It seems to me that PB used last night a bit like an extra pre-season friendly to give the new signings some match time and to see how they stood up in the heat of the battle.

My verdict on the new signings:

Bennett looks useful - probably behind Coker as left back, but useful cover for there and Centre Back

Clifford - not as good as I was expecting although looked to be reasonable back up, although will reserve final judgement until he's playing alongside one of our first choice central midfielders against league 2 opposition.

Payne - one for the future, but one great run in the first half showed his potential. Could be interesting to bring him on for the last 10 minutes in games against tired legs.

Reid - not really warmed to him yet, not sure what he adds to the side - although saying that he had no service last night and was up against a quality pair of centre backs

Cowan - I quite like the look of him, seems strong, quick and committed.

In summary I think all 5 will be useful back up but none should displace the starting XI from Saturday (plus the two first teamers recovering from injury - Hurst and Timlin).

Yes, absolutely, I believe Coker is our no 1 choice LB but Straker was covering perfectly well and at that stage, I'd have gone for the extra forward impetus that Freddy should have brought. Or Seedy even to be fair. So many of their players were on yellows by that stage he might have drawn a foul that got them sent off, which could have proved hugely advantageous.

We have a limited squad. The cups are always an unwelcome distraction. We've got no chance of winning two of them, and the lure of Wembley pretty much kyboshed last season.

We need to get out of this sodding league, that should always be the main focus.

Totally agree with this. With such a small squad - getting out of Leaue 2 is the number 1 priority. Last night was a good opp to try out the new signings and see if they can cause selection headaches for the next league game.

Agree with the general opinion on here that we played well and again the work-rate was first class. Yeovil just had that little bit of extra quality especially going forward. The only worry is where are the goals coming from, particularly from midfield. Everyone who has played in midfield so far has done well but you cant really see any of them getting six to eight goals a season. This is what you usually need from one or two midfielders if you are going to be successful. Otherwise, things are so much better under Brown's regime.

Talking about Bennett, his injury caused me the most worry last night (more than the final result) . Hopefully it's not the same leg he's already had problems with? Has anyone heard any news in that respect.

I recall someone in the SZ group that it COULD, I repeat COULD be a ligament thing. I personally can't back that up tho.

Glad we lost. Hope we're dumped out of all pointless cups at the first hurdle and focus on the main prize.
Don't quite agree.
A televised League or FA Cup game against a big team could actually bring in more money than our JPT final. More money might mean one less embargo or court order and could therefore help towards promotion.

Didn't listen, but that was the game I saw.

God knows what match most people were at.

FWIW I thought Reid had a bit about him - and I'm not just referring to the spare tire round his waist. A couple of times he looked to turn in the area. The instincts were there if not the sharpness. Think Elliot Benyon but with hopefully a happier ending.

OK....................a piece of totally useless and perhaps even annoying information, that I don't think anyone picked up on......probably, because no one had either the interest or thought that it was really useful to find out. IF we had beaten Yeovil on Tuesday, our number would have been 21 (Stevenage) and we would have been drawn away to Everton. Sorry about that!
