1. Work rate first class. 2. Football the way it should be played on the deck. 3. PB accepting the fans and thanking them for the support. 4. Fans clapping and accepting the work rate that was put in (haven't seen that from a losing southend crowd for a long time). If we were a div 2 team and they were Champ I'll eat my hate... Well done PB and the team...

Ok considering Yeovil are 2 divisions higher and didn't really field an overly weakened side. must be aware of possible pitfalls though. can't help wondering eastwood should have come on. a goalscorer alongside a targetman and not 2 targetmen together when corr came on. payne deserves a special mention as well but i agree in the main no need to panic as yet.

Think that was the best defeat I have ever seen. Every player gave their all work rate was first class. Yeovil were a massive physical team but thought our boys really matched them and a big well done to Straker gave Yeovil problems all night. Well done Anthony.

That's exactly my thought, the best defeat I've ever seen by a southend team and I've seen a lot :-(

The injury to Bennett put a spanner in the works, I don't think Coker would of come on otherwise, and Reid would probably not have got 90 minutes.

Coker didn't have to come on. I'd have gambled keepin Straker there when Bennett went off. We were chasing the game so instead of Coker Id have brought on Freddy. Coker for me is in the lead however as first choice LB.

That was a great game to lose tbh. We played well, competed well and lost by the odd goal. Effort was there again and players applauded for it. Not too sure where the goals may come from mind. Not yet convinced by Reid. Doesn't look that fit to me. Bennett okay, Cowan did well. Straker another good performance along with Phillips and Prosser. Atkinson and White great game too.

YT had just that slight extra yard of pace, vision, great keeper and scored a well worked goal. Their lack of discipline might cost em in the Championship though.

We probably (revenue aside) could do without an extra cup game so for me it was all good.

I actually enjoyed it tonight. I sat in the South Upper and have never sat in that part of the ground before (apart from when it was the old south terrace) and have to say I was very pleasantly surprised with the view.

Thanks Neil. I hope you do too; it's great to see such a small local side in the Championship alongside the big boys - there's still some hope for real football teams among the foreign owned franchises. Good luck to the Glovers.

Hope Bennett isn't too badly injured as you could see his class, sure he looked unfit, but it was clear he'd played most of his games higher up the leagues.

Cowan looked OK, slightly rusty and obviously keen to impress. Could be more than useful at L2 level. Clifford and Payne did reasonably well i thought, but I worry that Payne's stature really will hold up his development. He looked a terrific player on the ball but he's going to need to wise up fast as to how to combat big, strong midfielders and CB's in the professional game IMHO, but still encouraging signs.

I agree with Eastling about the where the goals are going to come from, Reid didn't look great but having said that he played the first half on his own and was fairly isolated and again obviously tired towards the end.

All in all a decent performance, some very nice play at times and against a decent L2 side that level of performance would have earned 3 points IMHO. PB has them disciplined, working hard and trying to play football and thats good enough for me.

P.S, where is our Anthony Straker? That's not the same fella from last year, surely?

I can handle walking away from Roots Hall losing if we put in effort like that. Well done again Southend, could have easily took it to extra time but for two decent late saves from Stech - one a worldy!!!!

Would also like to add that despite the sadness to see Bennetts injury (looks ligament to me), our problematic left side from past couple of seasons looks very decent. Coker and Straker link up well.

Atkinson again looked a great prospect, relishing seeing him and a fit Timlin in the same side.

Great performance! Some great saves from Bentley! Straker had a big presence; as did Corr when he came on. However, I don't rate Reid that much...

Big, strong, quick, powerful, good in the air. Caused a few problems until he tired. Should have done better with a few chances but looks a very decent prospect I'd say.

Really? I thought he looked big and strong, but was slow, Phillips and Prosser were constantly out pacing him, cumbersome, didn't have a great touch and just generally didn't look like much of a footballer.

Straker played really well tonight, such a difference from last season, yet when Coker misplaced a pass to him there was some women who shouted out "Straker your going back to your **** from last season!" I honestly don't understand some people.

Yes there were some misplaced passes tonight, but the commitment and desire shown was brilliant. Yeovil were actually quite a dirty side, Payne and Clifford were constantly being put up in the air after the ball had gone, and I thought we battled well and didn't shy away from it. Hopefully we can continue to play without fear and hopefully with the fans being supportive as they were tonight, it should give them to confidence to do that.
