Official Match Thread: SUFC vs. Tranmere Rovers

On the plus side...

Borient 0 Swansea 5

AND

Stoke 2 Colchester 1

Can't be much lower than 10th, good place to push on from.

Had to lose at some point and no shame against the 2nd placed team.

Onwards and upwards people, 3 points next weekend I'm sure.

Down to 7th

Defending at corners cost us (amazed by the clearance on the line)

Didnt think Tranmere were better than Doncaster, just better at set pieces

The number of times we hit the bar :thump:

Frustrating stuff

Well a very mediocre game and conceded from two set pieces again. Didnt create much and apart from a 10 minute spell at 2-1 down didnt really look like scoring.

Overall not much to sing about but Positives :

Tranmere are the top of the table team and certainly didnt look any better than us.

Collis' save in the first half from Taylor, superb.

Hunts two first half crosses, which Clarke missed a sitter from, and Barrett scored from.

L. Clarke is a weird one, moments of pure brilliance as we have already seen, and then moments of pure donkey. Not that we gave the strikers much in the way of service...

Bit of a nothing game the Trannies bossed the midfield...Macca and Bailey very quiet first half....they were no better than us but I will put it down to an off day for the Blues.....

Roll on next week when we get back to winning ..:)

Toilet today, simple as that. Defending was shambolic, especially at set pieces, which has cost us again. Im expecting alot better next week, today is definitely one to forget about.

The most frustrating thing about today was that Tranmere are a team of complete journeyman footballers who are not going to get much higher in the football echolons, and yet, they were too wise and too clever for us.

In terms of pure ability, I would put us miles ahead of Tranmere, but what they did was do the ugly things well. They closed us down, they did not allow us time to get our foot on the ball, they controlled a lot of the midfield and when we did get the ball, they dropped very deep in numbers, a ploy which has caused us problems over the last 3 years on many occasion.

The defending at set pieces was very poor, the marking for Taylor's goal was ridiculous, it's not as if he isn't a threat in the air... and the amount of space we allowed them in the first half from a free kick which only a wonder save from Collis denied them a goal was even worse.

That said, I think the main culprit for this defeat would have to be Mr Barrett himself. The tackle which gave away the free kick from which they scored there winner from was so completely unnecessary it was untrue, and I think he knows that, his reaction after they scored said it all.

It's dissapointing to lose, especially at home, but it is one of those games probably best forgotten about - I guess it isnt that much of a shock really as in all honesty, we haven't been playing that well whilst on our undefeated run - not as well in fact as we were when we were stuttering at the start of the season!

I would expect us to bounce back against Crewe next week, and there is certainly some food for thought for Tilly and Brush - today we did at times look very narrow, and perhaps it may have been a case for both wingers playing rather than just one, especially with Tranmere playing 5 in midfield, it made it too congested for us to get anywhere down the centre, and also allowed there extra men to get forward down the wings - that said, I thought Lewis Hunt did a sterling job down the right, pretty much all on his own!

Crewe should be a different proposition next week, and I would expect us to get all three points, if there result at home to whipping boys Bournemouth is anything to go by today, then it ought to be comfortable!

Yeh I agree too, to much hoofball league 2 style going on, Richards being the main colprate as usual, but when he tried passing it out he often cocked up. Not that hes a bad defender he just needs to stop hoofing. He wasnt the only one.

Today we looked desperate at times and the long balls showed that.Hunt for me looked dodgy in defence position wise, but looked good going forward and good crosses in to the box.
Overall tranmere were better than us but we did have a few spells of nice football but not enough for me to go home happy.

When Lewis is our best performer in a game it really shows how ineffective we were!

Agreed with the too much hoofball. What annoys me more is that Brush and Tilson just stood in the dugout arms crossed and just shook their heads when another long ball was launched. Get out there and tell them not to!

The organisation is still not there and its even worse at set pieces. If the one early on where Sheriff was completely free, which caused Collis to make a stunning save, wasn't a warning I don't know what was. Shabby marking for the first and Richards never even jumped for the second, which allowed Taylor a completely free header.

Tranmere had nothing going for them except their organistation. They had one up front, with him being a target man, and no Greenacre, yet they still got the 3 points. Hmm, hopefully it was a one off and we can get back to winning ways next Saturday. Suppose we can look on the bright side, we ain't Orient.

Have to disagree on the Hunt comment though it will hurt a few people on here to admit, but he was probably the best of a mediocre 11 today and not only in defence but also going forward.
