Having been refereed by one of the oldest referees last Saturday, we now move on to one somewhat younger. In fact we go from the second oldest to the second youngest referee on the Football League List, in his second season. The 30 year old Ross Joyce from Elston, just outside Middlesbrough, has progressed from the Teeside youth leagues remarkably quickly.

He has refereed Southend just once before and this will be his 40th match as a Football League referee, his previous 39 producing a very high 153 yellows and 8 reds. Nearly all his early matches were in League Two; since then they've been mainly League One so he's probably doing okay. In fact, this seasons 10 games (47 yellows, 2 reds) do not include any League Two games.

By profession, he is the Referees Development Officer for the North Riding FA. The number of League Officials who actually work for the various county FAs seems to have increased dramatically in recent years. Favourable treatment from assessors ? Possibly.

That previous Southend match was the 2-0 defeat at Bradford City last season, when yellows were shown to O'Neill, Wordsworth and Timlin and one home player. He started his League career with a match at Northampton just over a year ago with a 3-0 home win. He has returned there once since for another match which also ended as a 3-0 home win !

At the end of the previous season he refereed the Conference Play Off final at Wembley in front of a crowd of over 47,000.

Assisting will be Craig Hicks from Sutton and, once again, Nick Cooper from Ipswich. Ian Dudley from Nottingham will be carrying out Fourth Official duties.

I thought the guy who refereed us at Scunthorpe John Brooks two weeks ago was younger, I seem to recall aged 26, might be wrong

That'll teach me to cut and paste from last season, when he was the youngest. Now edited and very reassuring to know at least someone reads this stuff. Thank you.

His bookings to WW, O'Neil and Tims, do they suggest he books for poor tackles/fouls more than shirt hugging stuff?
So far this season we seem to have been quite fortunate not to have more yellows turn to red, if this fellow has a high card usage then subs could be wise (as Bomber did last game.)

Wasn't at that game so can't help with what the bookings were for; he didn't caution Deegan!

Today he was very good for first half.
Did PB pee in his tea at half time because 2nd half he was a changed official and then crap.
And lino on side of main stand was too often 20 yards behind play.

That lino failed to give us 2 corners when the ball went over the line. One of which they scored from the resulting play. Apparently he also informed the ref that he should award a penalty.

Was he the guy from Ipswich who Suffolk Shrimper must have upset?!

No he didn't. The whole ball needs to be out of play. He couldn't possibly see if it had when the keeper took it out coz the keeper blocked him and the second one clearly wasn't.

Anyhow, I've now seen the penalty / sending off. I am none the wiser. Yeah it's a penalty, but I cannot fathom out how that is an OBVIOUS goalscoring opportunity. The key word is obvious. The player never had the ball and had an awful lot to do to make it goal scoring opportunity, let alone an obvious one. A yellow at the very most. If you are going to start sending players off for that, you'll be doing it everytime you give a penalty. Poor decision, that whilst not costing us the game, has cost us a player next Tuesday

Who knows? It is completely possible to come back from a two goal deficit, with much of the second-half to play, especially if it was eleven against eleven. Whether WE would have come back is another question and one we will never know the answer to

We won't be appealing, I'd say. The Northampton player, without the foul, had a clear header on goal from eight yards out.

A harsh, unnecessary decision though by the referee. He wouldn't have been criticised by the assessor if he had gone yellow but he seems to be a career referee with his sights on Select Group 2 who wants to get noticed.

Twenty yards behind (or in front of) the second defender or 20 yards behind play ?

Kerry has already dealt with your first point. What made you think the "lino" called the penalty? It wasn't even his side of the pitch. Do you really think it wasn't a penalty? I personally have no doubt but might question the red card.

Referring to the corner decisions. I was placed less than 20 feet behind the goal. So I think I'll trust my eyes to the linos, who must have guessed. To say "no it wasn't" smacks of arrogance, and closing ranks. As to the penalty, Demetriou said so last night, as quoted by CP.

Wasn't at the game, when did these corner incidents occur ?

I wasn't being arrogant, merely pointing out you were wrong. No need for debate.

But I was a bit closer, and I am a former Level 4 referee, Secretary of the Southend Referees Assn with 20 years experience. Your move.

THAT'S arrogance.
