Can't stand these threads about non league talent. For every Jamie Vardy, there are 100 Alassane N'Diayes. There's a reason these players are at that level.
There is talant out there,Vardy is the extreme, but there is some really good young players. We are yet to see what Holman can do as he needed an operation after a training ground clash, he looked good to me.

Rubbish. There is only 92 professional football teams. Not every player can play professionally.

Also stop using Vardy as the only example. He is the extreme cases. Loads of non league players come in the pro game and do well. One of them plays our team, certain Ben Coker.

Mooney started out in the irish leagues just like McLaughlin did. McGlashan started out in non league.

Its funny that people get annoyed with these threads as they don't always "Work out" but yet every single year Non-League or Non-league background players help fill our squad.

I get your point but why did you use N'Diaye? He had never played non league prior to him joining us, he came from Palace youth.

Maybe Mark Salter would've been a better example.

I think the point more is that SZ's criteria for if we should sign a non league player is 'has he scored a lot of goals', which is only a small part of what makes a non league footballer capable of stepping up to league football (especially since you get a lot more space to shoot in non-league). There obviously are good players in non league but scouts are more likely to spot them than us.

There is a guy at Dagenham and Redbridge that is worth a gamble at the moment, very young works hard and must be worth putting a bid in for, think his name is Oliver Hawkins, already scored a few goals this season:thumbsup:

Thought I'd revisit some non-league suggestions that we have made in the past. A lot of posters are constantly saying we should look for non league gem but of the names suggested on this thread a couple of years ago only one player has progressed to a higher level!

John Sands- Now at Boston National League North, was with Ryman League side Leiston before this. So has Dropped down.
Kris Newby- Dropped down from East Thurrock toRyman North side GWR
Alexander Read- Still at Harlow
Tony Stokes- Dropped down from Concord toCanvey in Ryman Premier.
Jacob Cleaver- Dropped down from Concord to GWRin Ryman North
Reece Harris- Stayed the same Level moving toEast Thurrock

Sam Collins- Still at Concord, had a season outwith a broken leg

Craig Robson- Gone up a couple of divisions tothe national league now playing at Dagenham & Redbridge and very impressivefrom what I’ve heard.
Andrew Tidswell- still playing in the unitedcounties league

I do not watch any local non-league football so cannot comment on the quality of these players or the others being suggested. I do not find it surprising though that the majority are playing at the same or lower level.

Vardy and Eastwood are often quoted as examples of non-league players made good but both were released at earlier age by professional clubs which show that they had the pedigree. Similarly we signed Ben Coker from non-league but he had previously played professionally.

How many players make it from non-leagues teams with out any previous involvement with a professional club? Do you know if any of the listed players here had prior links to professional teams.

I am not saying that players with no previous attachment to a league club will not make it later in life but I suspect it is very few. There are also many talented players at non-league football who for whatever reason do not want to pursue a professional career; it could explain why some have dropped down a level as they do not have the time or desire to fully commit.

Michail Antonio is probably the latest one.

You could easily read this thread and get the impression that virtually nobody makes it into league football and does reasonably well from the lower leagues, or the lower end is packed full of superstars. There are no doubt that lots dont make it, but the outcomes are probably somewhere in the middle. There was a colleague on here who researched the matter in some depth and found that around 50% work out from league clubs "taking the gamble" . Secondly just a reminder that whilst the transfer window was open over 30 were snapped up by league clubs , including Premier and Championship , a few involved fees, although the majority didnt

Opportunity is also a factor. There are x number of league jobs available and probably fifty times that of players who would want the chance. Many get to a point where they believe they have missed the boat and as a consequence application and motivation diminish. Because of the huge influx of foreign players, mainly at the highest level, a lot of native talent is displaced and lower league managers look toward the top of the pyramid for flotsam rather than downwards for potential.

It's understandable but not necessarily foolproof. A lot of non-league players that make the step up are found wanting. But it's often overlooked, that many young 'starlets' from big clubs, fail to make any impact when loaned to lower league clubs. Just because some young lads show potential and are given the opportunity to be with a big club it can be a) the scouts saw more than was really there or b) the lads fail to apply themselves. Plus a host of other factors.

A lot of displaced young players at a higher level never recover from rejection. They may be very good but are lost to the pro game. Many players at non-league level were never given the opportunity to show what they can do. Opportunity is everything. Managers and scouts make errors on judging players ability day in and day out. Some players are no brainers and will excel anywhere but most need opportunity, recognition, coaching and mentoring.

I was trying to think of the worst player to ever play for us. Was a toss up between him and Bedsente Gomis. Point taken though, an actual non league player would have made more sense

Do you mean Sada N'Diaye or have we had two N'Diaye's play for us? Sada was bad enough; surely no-one could be worse and have the same surname?
