I agree. My point is that it's the part in bold above that's important and not necessarily the announcement by the club of squad numbers.

The squad number is the confirmation that you are not getting first football until Jan at the earliest. Before that point you can still play you way into the managers plans.

Well it appears to me and im 28000kms away that some touted signings appear to have gone sour,not a word now in over a week about the lad from Billericay - Layne.Nothing said from the heirarchy about Fagan ,Mad Max and that other young centre back,or any of the midfielders and strikers we trialed lately.You would have thought at least a little news on any of them would have been forthcoming by now.

I think the news about Southend's interest in Isaac Layne leaked before personal terms had been agreed and other clubs are now stepping up their interest in the player.

As late as Thursday the Billericay chairman was tweeting he would sign.

Dont see any reason to believe other clubs are involved.

I reckon we're going to sign someone this afternoon. No idea who, although Fagan, Layne and Mad Max could all be likely candidates. It may spill over to Saturday or Monday but today is the day another jigsaw piece falls into place.

I'm also calling that a further piece falls into place Thursday or Friday.
