Next manager

I'd rather have an experienced manager come in than take a gamble on an ex-player.

Fair enough, but as Tilly's proved the love of the club has stood us in better stead under his reign than some of the "proven" lower league managers we've sometimes had in charge!

I still think we might well end up with Peter Taylor for a 2nd spell in charge at some point in the future!

Tilly was a gamble, one that paid off but a gamble none the less. It's a tough descision to make but i'd hope the lure of a new stadium would help us attract someone of "good stock".

I'm not a fan of Taylor at all

On the basis that:

* he is a proven winner as a player
* he is the living embodiment of making the very most of one's resources
* he is a clever and personable chap - so good with the media...
* ... and you get the impression he is no one's fool; he won't stand for being mucked about
* he is passionate about the Blue army, and as Wignall proved, you have to have passion in your eyes...

;)

Provided he had a decent coach alongside him, I see no reason why Spinner wouldn't be anything but a first rate candidate. So ner.

:finger:

Matt

What about tactical nous?
What about player spotting ability?
What about his contacts book with other clubs help alert him of new talent or assist us in signing/loaning players?

If someone else is doing all that plus the coaching, then what pray tell is Spinner doing to earn his managerial keep? Delivering a battle cry before the game each week (with passion in his eyes) and spouting a few 'like I says' to the TV cameras after the games?

:fart: :finger:

Plank!

The odd thing about Taylor is that he has probably enjoyed most success at clubs (Gillingham & Brighton) where he has not had shed loads of cash to splurge. Hull being the possible exception.

He spent loads at Leicester, and promptly got the boot when it all went tits up, and Leicester nearly went bust. He also spent a lot at Palace this season for them to be mid table.

Tactical nous - the coach, and what Spinner has learnt from previous managers.

Player spotting ability - well, you either have that, or you don't. Who's to say Spinner won't? Who's to say Tilly does?!

Contacts book - yes, that would be useful. But surely not the sole criteria...?

By your reckoning, Sunderland should never have appointed Roy Keane. I mean, since he has brought in Bryan Kidd to be his coach, what pray tell is Keane doing to earn his managerial keep? Delivering a battle cry before the game each week (with passion in his eyes) and spouting a few 'like I says' to the TV cameras after the games?

Paul Jewell, as he is likely to resign this afternoon according to SSN!:minger:

The most accurate quote on this posting IMO.

Passion for the club combined with experience. If you can forget his first spell at The Blues and just looked at what he has been doing for the last 5 years i think most people would be happy to welcome him back with open arms......I certainly would

Not at all - I said nothing of the sort. Niall Quinn probably knows Roy Keane a darn sight better, having played with him in the Republic of Ireland side for years, than you know Spinner!

Hence, he was in a far better position to know whether Keane has tactical nous, player spotting ability, coaching ability, a contacts book etc.

The point is, you are not in a position to judge Spinner either way on any of those - so cant possibly say he's an ideal candidate!

Plank!

No f'ing thank you.
I have no wish for SUFC to start lumping the ball up front to whatever useless oaf of a token big bloke he's playing up front!

Same Glasgow, I just wanted to post Jewell had resigned from wigan, but couldn't be arsed to start a new thread in the 'All Leagues Chit Chat'

Hate the bloke with a passion! :flamer:

As you well know, I am omniscient.

:p

Besides, since when did knowing anything become a prerequisite for holding an opinion on this message-board...? You plank!

In terms of club football, he did well at Hull. Thats it really and they had a fair bit of money to bring in decent players and pay their wages when he took over. I wouldn't want him back.

Can you 2 ladies get a room to sort out your little tiffs today please? :hilarious:

I'm just winding Matt up - FWIW we already have a room and I've just trounced Matt on the PMs as well, so he's started resorting to non-arguments (the step before picking your ball up and walking away in a huff)...
