New Politics?

This is of course the usual Tory spin. There is a legitimate strand of opinion, both in the UK and elsewhere, which questions the efficacy of cuts in public services etc now, since they may abort at birth the fledgling economic recovery which countries like the UK and Spain appear to be making.See El Pais today for example.
Healey's aquiesence to the IMF didn't exactly do him(or Labour) any favours with the electorate either.Something which I'm sure both Brown and Darling were well aware of.

Which public sector post did you hold when you lived here?

Come on I would expect better of you, especially after your post about me using a highly offensive term as PIIGS, isn't your term for David Laws just as derogatory??

(At the time)it was a question for information as we were out with friends on Sat night and I didn't see any UK news.I'm glad he took the fall, for fiddling his expenses, but couldn't care less if he's gay or not.
FYI I'm not homophobic, as anyone who knows me, would attest.
BTW instead of Pigs try the Club Med Economies which is the term The Wall Street Journal currently employs.

A particularly useful piece of advice for the vast majority of the people on SZ.

Not necessarily the case for you though IIRC.:) (How do you feel about RM's new boss? They hate him here).
More seriously,I was making a point in an international context.Since we get the paper delivered and I'd read it over breakfast this am, I really couldn't be *rsed to provide a link to the business supplement.
In any case, as I'm sure you and others are aware,El Pais is available online and most people can use an online translator.

Which Spanish newspaper(s) (apart from the Sports ones)do you read in Madrid BTW?

I was not implying that you are homophobic just saying that 'gay boy' can be considered derogatory.

Also regarding the Club Med moniker, this does not seem to include Ireland, or are you telling me Ireland now has a Mediterranean coastline? ;)

David Laws struck me as a chap with his head screwed on the right way, but if he has been expecting the tax payer to pay for his private life then he has to go. I would have had more respect for him if he had come out of the wardrobe long ago and forked up the money for his love nest instead of trying to palm it off on us.

I would agree that the term "gay boy" could be considered derogatory. Are you gay? If so,I apologise unreservedly for any offense I may have caused you.:)
As for the Club Med. economies a simple plus Ireland should suffice.

That is my opinion too.

No I am not gay just a Devil's Advocate :p

CMEPI is not very easy to remember unlike PIIGS. ;)

:stupidyou:

There you have the difference between us in a nutshell.I'm quite happy to apologise unreservedly,if I've unwittingly caused you any offense.
You, however continue to employ a term, which as you're fully aware,is both derogatory and offensive to millions, including myself, when there are more politically correct alternatives easily available.Hardly very Christian.Get a life indeed.

I'm sure you could have easily found the link for everyone if it was that worth reading.

In answer to your question - none really. Maybe a quick flick through El Mundo but if there is a Spanish news story that's big enough for me to be interested in it, it'll be covered (to an extent) by the UK broadsheets or the Beeb.

Ah,you overestimate my keyboard skills I fear.;)
Stick with the Spanish press, free dailies, free Sports papers in bars etc(as I'm sure you know).
I learnt Spanish from reading La Vanguardia every day after my unemployed, Catalan flatmate(an early riser)had finished his subscription copy.Long before the age of satellite TV,the net and other distractions etc.:)

I did not realise previously that you were also offended by this term, which I will apologise for my continued use of it.

As I am yet to conduct a straw poll of any Spanish, Portuguese, Irish, Italian or Greek posters to see if they find the Acronym as offensive as you claim it be, I will have to take your word for it.

To me the use of Acronyms is not a matter of smugness and is why struggle to comprehend that it is offensive. Acronyms have always survived if they are easy to remember.

However as it is getting tiresome which I am sure you will agree. I willrefrain from using this one in your company so not to cause further offence.

Actually, it would appear you're only willing to apologise unreservedly to Bob if he were to be Gay, which he states he isn't. Not quite the same.

Also, your question as to his sexuality would imply that he would only have cause to be offended were he to be gay. Am I to presume from this that you now class yourself as Spanish?

I get the feeling he'd class himself as whatever's required to claim maximum benefits off of hard working taxpayers.

An interesting piece on Radio 2 from a Times Journalist today , stating that Law's and his "partner" did actually start off as ... Landlord and tenant , he obviously didn't come out so when the relationship started (still being Landlord and tenant ) to only went wrong as he didn't declare a possible conflict of interest, and oddly the Chancellor of the last government made £22,000 pounds from fliping (second home) yet didnt recieve the same harsh penality (of course teh city is now worried that a man they trusted is not in a key position ) . Im sure the Telegraph didn't want that to happen (much like the FT and the announcement last week of China reviewing their investments in Europe , only to have their story crushed the next day by... China ).

I think some "groups" are playing silly beggars .

No,but after living for more than 30 years in Spain I have a certainy affinity towards the Spanish/Catalan way of life.

How on earth do you manage to come to that conclusion?
I'm a taxpayer myself, and have always paid my taxes wherever I've worked, here in Spain, in France, the UK and the USA.
