New car tax bands

I drive a 406 HDi estate with the 110 BHP engine - my tax will be £120 for a year, so it is possible to have a family car with a modest amount of poke and still save money (certainly a lot more poke than the waddling 90 BHP version anyway!)

Peugeot make some fine diesel engines. I had a 1.9 406 diesel and for such a relatively low powered plant, it went quite well. When the engine blew up spectacularly on the M25 I replaced it with an HDi 110 and a finer diesel motor I have never driven.

Trouble is the parts are so goddamn expensive!!!

Do we know if the Conservative party might readjust these changes back to something more sensible if they get elected next time around?

"While we utterly condemn the Labour Parties deeply flawed use of retrospective taxation, and the damage it has done to the green cause, it is desperately unfortunate that this piece of legislation has been enancted long enough ago to make it, sadly, too difficult to change at this late stage blah blah blah...."

Well as Brown will hang onto power to last possible moment then they wont be lying will they.

The main gripe is that it doesnt just apply to new cars purchased. It is being applied to cars that people have already bought.

Its just a Labour tax on everybody while they claim to be doing everybody a favour on another hand....

The sooner Gordon muppet face is kicked out the better.

More random taxation bollix by this excuse for a government...:madman:...

That's my biggest gripe. Personally, I wouldn't mind the new tax bands if it wasn't just an excuse to push the overall tax burden up. If a £50 increase at the top end for the most polluting cars was offset by a £50 reduction at the bottom end for the most planet-hugging ones, then I'd be quite comfortable with it all. Maybe someone will prove me wrong and show me that it DOES work like that...

No, it doesn't work like that, which is why I have been banging on about retrospective taxation - it is undemocratic, unfair, and this one gives Green Taxes a bad name as you have pointed out, which is almost criminal in itself as Green taxes very much have a place in sorting out the mess we are making of this planet.
