Question Never played

 Not when they joined the Football League, I think they changed the name from Headington United to Oxford United around 1961/62.

Gah, you're right. They changed the name before they got in to the FL.

As Saturday bore out, years are not my strong point

Going into the 06/07 season we'd never played Arsenal, Leeds or Man Utd competitively. We then played Leeds twice in a week, beating them in the Carling Cup and then losing to them in the league which IIRC was Dennis Wise's first game in charge (and we didn't deserve to lose).

Of course, that Carling Cup win led to another game a couple of weeks later, the details of which we all recall and suddenly we were down to Arsenal only.

I worked with a bloke who supports AFC Wimbledon and as far as he's concerned they are the old Wimbledon risen from the ashes. The fact that Franchise FC gave up the pretence of being Wimbledon some time ago and "handed" the honours to AFC bears this.

Being a touch pedantic Accringtn Stanley actually folded in 1962/63 season and were replaced in the league by Oxford United at the start of the 1963/64 season.

Good post BTW.

Yeah I thought that most AFC Wimbledon fans think of themselves as the old Wimbledon.

I have just checked it out & Accrington Stanley FC (1891) folded in 1966. It looks like they carried on for a couple of seasons in non-league even though they resigned from the Football League in 1961/2. Legally they are not connected to the current Acccrington Stanley and they are a 'new club'.

Unlike AFC Wimbledon the new Accrington Stanley do not include any pre-1966 Accrington Stanley records in their 'Honours', although the old club is mentioned on the Official Site you have to click on an external link for any further history.

All very confusing!!

A couple of years ago, cefore Accrington and Wimbledon made it into the football league, we had never played Man Ure, Weeds and the Ar$e.

We played Weeds and Man Ure in two consecutive carling cup rounds, leaving just the Ar$e, who we would have played in the same competition had Defoe's offside goal been correctly ruled out.

I didn't know that about Accrington finally folding in 1966, but I was aware that they were a "new club".

Indeed - AFCWimbledon are the only "AFC" that I have sympathy with. FC United (and Enfield Town for any Non League Buffs) are right up there with Crawley in the biggest tuncs in Football.

FC United really get my goat - I certainly wasn't cheering them when they beat Rochdale in the FA Cup last year. There are loads of proper teams in the Greater Manchester catchment area who could have benefited from all those Man Utd fans hissyfitting their way away from Old Trafford. It would have been better if disaffected Man Utd fans had started following the lieks of Bury, Stockport, Rochdale, etc

Absolutely. By forming FC United those concerned only proved further that they weren't real fans in the first place, and like you say there will be any number of clubs at non-league or lower football league level that would have really appreciated a couple of hundered new fans. If they are going to play at Bury, why not just support Bury?

I'm sorry but anyone who can just switch off their allegiance to a football team because they don't like how it is being run isn't a true fan.

Is there any real reason to dislike FC United? I'd have thought that setting up their own club was a decent way of cutting ties with their old club. Pressumably they'd chosen Man United over the likes of Bury years ago and been looked down on by Bury fans ever since. If Southend ever went out of existance (not that Man Utd have) I'd imagine backing a new Southend set up by fans rather than switching to Canvey or Braintree or whoever. MK Dons - hate them, Crawley - no respect for their route to success, FC United - I don't have a problem. Might be more to it that I'm missing so happy to be corrected.

that was a bit gutting - going to the 1st ever match at Elland Road then finding out you were 4 days too late. Hats off to everyone who went to both (not you Yorkshire Blue, that's cheating!)

.

That's my point of contention. If someone now went and started a new AFC Southend or somesuch because they didn't like Paul Sturrock / Tara Brady / The Tea Lady could you just switch your allegiance and turn your back on the Shrimpers?

Fair enough, I'd say the difference would be that Southend United need us but if Manchester United dropped a couple of thousand fans it doesn't make a jot of difference. To go to the effort of setting up your own club you'd have to be pretty involved in your current club so I guess it would boil down to not having a voice and seeing your club move from untold riches to untold debts with no useful means of complaint. Must be very frustrating to see the future of the club risked like that and I guess they just wanted to back a club that was run properly.

I'm sure you are right there. But for me, thats not what football supporter should be about.
