Agreed. He's not our hero, he's Millwall's despite his banging on about SUFC being his boyhood club. Shame he can't find a job training their youths or something rather than eating up our wage bill.

Agreed.

He could even sell burgers on matchday,..Every little helps.

Agreed - and I have nothing against him personally. I don't think he's the worst player at the club, but when you look at the overall cost of signing him (wages, length of contract, signing on fee etc) he must be one of our worst signings in a long long time.

perhaps he will retire through injury and the insurance will pay up the final year of his salary? Personally would be happy with a fit Harris as believe he would do well in the current set up as he runs the channels pretty well (even for his age) - he is more mobile than Freddy and Corr imho

You have to lure players of the calibre of Eastwood and Harris to a club like ours, we could not sign these marquee kind of players with one year deals.

Eastwood and Harris are experienced players and feared/respected by colleagues and opponents alike, although they are not currently playing....they will both have big parts to play this season, even more so when the injuries and or/suspensions start kicking in not to mention the loss of form.

Freddy still has that X factor and drops into that hole thus creating havoc, if it wasn't for the terrific form of the Assombolonga/Tomlin partnership, then Freddy would be playing. Neil Harris is the most intelligent footballer we have and is hugely positive influence in and around the changing room, last season we were a better team with him in the side.

It is a fantastic option for a club like ours to have Britt, Tomlin, Corr, Harris, Eastwood and Benyon

I can't believe the stick that people give Freddy and Harris on here considering what they have done in their careers. The same people who wanted rid of Gavin Tomlin 2 months ago!!!

Its hard to justify Harris when he has been out all season, which whilst its with the power of hindsight isnt exactly a shock with a player his age.

Eastwood is a few years younger than Harris yet got a 2 year deal and even now is a good squad player to have.

Most of us questioned the length of Harris' contract at the outset, and the reality is probably that we could only get him at a salary within our budget if it was over a longer contract.

Unfortunately it looks like it backfired, he never really lived up to expectations when he played (although did look better later in season with Freddy), and now looks like he wont play again, or if he does I cant see him making an impact.

Harris experience will help get the best out of some of our younger players in the club so maybe at the moment being injured he is helping in that capacity.

It's nice to have competition for places and I am sure when he gets fully fit then he will be back in the fold, Freddy and Corr will have to work even harder.

As for Benyon I would ship him out on loan in January he needs games

One problem is that we don't have the luxury of too many forwards. On paper we look ok but we have to consider certain factors. Tomlin is on fire but that can extinguish itself (hopefully not). Assombalonga is only 20 and that is an age where consistency is a rarity in football. Even now I would like to see him come off earlier in a game when things are not quite going his way. He's still learning.

Eastwood may or may not be fit enough to start every game and Corr historically is not one to fill me with great confidence either in his footballing ability (secondary issue) or his ability to play for the majority of a season due to injuries. So in essence that leaves us Benyon and Harris. Benyon is yet to prove himself and in fairness is yet to get enough opportunity to prove himself whereas Harris is a quantity we know but cannot be relied on in terms of injury.

I would hate to scupper the final part of a players distinguished career but if I had the choice I would like a younger, fitter striker on the books in place of Harris. Its the split between sentiment and sense.

To be positive Bomber was on the pitch in his suit on Friday without a foot/ankle strapping contraption. He was great with the sponsors and ball boys and on encouraging the players. He has heaps of lower league knowledge and contacts and he has a genuine local affection for the club.

I have a hunch that might have been because it was his daughter wearing a Southend kit with Harris on the back of her shirt during the half time penalty shoot outs, scoring penalties freely amongst a load of boys a fair bit older than her! Reason being, I know Harris coaches a boys team, and I know some of my kids at school are in it, and they were part of that shoot out.

He was there too the week before when we did the presentations, he seems to know everyone and is a great ambassador for the club.

And of course will be our next manager when Sturrock gives it up or gets gardening leave.

He probably costs more in Ferrero Rochers than Brian Wheeler though.

A Team is a squad.

Did a terrific job towards the end of last season. More than happy to have players of that calibre at the club. He hasn't turned into a bad player just because others ahead of him have taken their chances.

I agree. Everytime I've seen him play he's worked his socks off. It's players like Neil & Freddy that our success might depend on. These quality, experienced players playing a limited role for now and being prepared to do it. However, at a drop of a hat, step in to cover for injuries. Also, what positive off field qualities are they bringing to the squad ? I think many.

Neil will be back in training on Xmas day. Neil's a great lad, his son was involved in the penalty shoot out which is why he was on the pitch with his daughter too. Brings more to the club than just on the pitch.

yep- His lad was one of the penalty takers, he is following in his fathers footsteps and playing for Rayleigh boys (U10's I think). The boys were in a box 2 down from me . Re the ball boys, my son was the one with the broken leg  - as expected he didn't actually touch the ball, but had a good time anyway
