For any of you mad enough to go...

Please let us all know how we played?

Who stood out?

Were any of the random trialists any good?

Sturrock pleased with work out. Says he will be having a chat with Matt Paterson too.

:stunned:

If he's got any sense he'll play him and give him a chance to impress and therefore attract potential new clubs. In everyone's best interest I'd have thought, especially with Corr and Sturrock still not available.

Didn't we have Andre Blackman on trial before?

Spoke to a mate who is an AFC Wimbledon fan and he said that he had a lot of talent, but seemed to have an attitude problem.

I can see your point, but if he doesnt intend to play him in the league, surely its best to let others have a try/develop a relationship? try JJ and moshni more upfront etc.

Oh how good to be back home after an eve match by 10.

In brief:

Bentley - commanding against a pi** poor attack. Should be reasonable back up to Morris.
Leonard - good performance. Committed, full of effort and some skill too. Sign him up.
Blackman - hmm, maybe. Give him another outing on Thurs. Poss a bit suspect back tracking but good going forward and worked hard to impress.
Prosser - committed, in a quiet ground it was quite funny really. Did ok
Coughlan - not much to do, just sat back and let Prosser get on with it.
Woodyard Smith - ok but still lightweight. Some way off being a first teamer.
James-Lewis - put in plenty of effort and looked skilful (though I could v Needham, I trapped the ball nicely a couple of times when it came off the pitch). Must focus though, needs to learn that if he is not to be a liability in a first team appearance,
and I think he will do if he doesn't get too cocky
Sawyer - poor, too many mis-placed passes which is not good when playing Needham
Pericard - ugh. No thanks. He couldn't miss the goal (otherwise he might have)
Crawford - ran around a bit but, sorry, I've thought for ages he just hasn't got it even for League 2 level and tonight did
nothing to convince me otherwise
Risser - best to last. Tall, some skill, committed, looked reasonably fit, passed well, looked dangerous and would like to see Hall in the team with him so he could be supplied with some decent ammo. Do not allow him to take free kicks though, his one effort is still rising and possibly now nearing Norfolk.
Subs - plenty from mid second half onwards so all those who kicked-off got a reasonable run. Nice goal from Smith.

So, a good work out v poor opposition, sign up Leonard, give Risser another opportunity but a definite prospect, and hopefully Pericard is already on his way to dissapoint at another club trial.

Well, in my humble opinion... Wasn't particularly impressed with either of the trialists up front, but Crawford played well. Woodyard was solid, Sawyer so-so. James-Lewis showed flashes. Leonard looked classy. Blackman was shocking in the first half but much better in the second - showed some pace and skill which had been nowhere before and had looked powder puff. Prosser was superb in the air but unless I was mishearing seemed to spend the entire match telling various people to eff off. Coughlan was Coughlan and didn't really put a foot wrong. I was impressed with Bentley though he didn't have too much to do.

Maybe he will play him in the league?

Clubs are more likely to come in for him if he is playing and match fit. Also he should be playing his guts out if he doesn't want to sink to non-league next year. Finally, unless his appearance bonus' are excessive surely better to be paying him and being involved rather than literally throwing his wage money down the toilet. We do need a striker and although it hasn't really worked for him up until now, maybe PS can get something out of him? Saints fans rated him...

Pericard - no thanks.

Riser - worth another look.

Blackman - didn't do much for me and do we need another left back? (unless Barca are in for Gilbert!)

What James said. Leonard did say after the final whistle that he was very close to agreeing terms and may sign before the Norwich game, hopefully. Great Bentley save near the end and Harry got in the thick of it but stood tall. Not a bad night out really and a fair few who made the trip from Suffolk too.:hilarious:

Yes, the OS ran with the excellent headline of 'Blackman On Trial' which raised a few chuckles in a casually racist kind of way.

Ahhh yes of course. Excellent memory B.

:hilarious:

Sawyer and Leonard gave the ball away to much but Leonard is excellent going forward along with Blackman (2nd half ). Pericard was dire and the other bloke was nothing special for a big lad didn't win as many headers as expected but plays well with his back to goal. I thought prosser was excellent won everything and was vocal and commanding. I've slated prosser in the past but i think he will be an adequate squad player if learns from his mistakes from last season. Really worried about sawyer though, during pre season from what I've seen and heard from in training he has not been up to standard. I hope he can re-discover his form from 2 years ago.

I seriously think he has a problem? mild case of tourettes perhaps?

Right - this was my first viewing of the season so will try to be objective and hopefully unbiased. Difficult to gauge too much though as NM were pretty limited though they did work hard for the most part.

Bentley - Did nothing wrong. looked confident and a great save late on after at least 3 shrimpers had passed up the opportunity of a simple clearance
Leonard - Looked good. A must sign to give cover and competition if nothing else. Did very well to get the 4th goal in off Pericards knee
Blackman - good god no - he was like Johnny Herd without the long throw
Prosser - gonna disagree with a few of you here, yes he won a fair bit in the air, but his overall play, positioning, and ball play was truly awful - he just looked like an accident waiting to happen (I think this might be the first time I've seen him play). And what is with the constant shouting F off at everything?
Coughlan - solid, knew too much for the opposition.
Woodyard - Did OK, without ever really excelling..tidy enough
James-Lewis - Very good - stand out player in the first half. always wanted the ball and used it well.
Sawyer - Above average, but no more. couldn't knock his commitment, but didnt look great on the ball. MJL looked a class above him to be honest (though admittedly they are different players)
Pericard - I'd be amazed if he gets a deal on that showing - couple of decent touches, and showed glimpses of class, but you'd want a lot more from him. - to give him his dues he looked a bit better when he went up top after Crawford went off.
Crawford - average really, I kinda quite like the guy, but I just cannot see how he's not going to end up playing at Needham Markets level.
Risser - I was quite impressed, has a touch of class at times, was very entusiastic which you don't often get with trialists..you could tell he really wanted it. Was great to see a complete stranger engaging with the regulars and trying to get them to play his way. Clearly an intelligent player and knows the game. Too early to say, but definitely worth another look. He was head and shoulders above the other front men. Great touch to set up final goal as well as assist for pen and scoring himself.
Subs
To be honest the only subs I noticed were Asante who looked quite threatening down the right, Smith who gave a lively impressive cameo and scored a cracking goal, and Paterson who looked unfortunately like we're gonna be lumbered with him till his contract expires.

Normally I don't like pre-season games, but this was quite entertaining all in all.

Will be bloody amazing if Paterson came back and started to play, give him credit if that happens because that is very professional in my opinion!

It still actually amazes me how many football scientists there are on this board, I thought it was just me!

Good to see we can do it against Wakering and Needham!

Or the fact nobody else wants him and he has to stick around?

If Pato is going to do anything, then he needs to tear up trees with the money he is on and he also needs to play regularly - neither of those things are realistically going to happen. PS is probably covering his losses - we are stuck with Paterson, obviously cannot pay him off, so might as well give him some game time in case we need him for Hereford.
