My First Southend Match

Sleaford Shrimper

Grumpy Old Man
Just digging through my box of programmes and memorabilia from football matches that I've attended since the 1960s and I came across this programme from my first-ever visit to Roots Hall on Friday 8th September 1967, Blues vs Swansea Town in Division 4. I stood on the high old South Bank for the first half then transferred to the North Stand via the path behind the West Stand for the second half. Exciting game that we won 1-0 scored by Andy Smillie, if I remember rightly. After that night I was hooked and have supported Southend ever since.

@Sleaford Shrimper Smillie did indeed score the only goal of the match in front of a crowd of 13,502.

The Southend Team was as per programme.

You beat me by 5 days!! My first game was the following Wednesday against Darlington in the League Cup, which we sadly lost 2-1.

Mine was Dagenham away boxing day 2012, loads of little tidbits from that game. Maher on the bench for them, John Still as their manager. Duo of Tomin and Assombalonga up front for us was fun to watch, Kevan Hurst at his best. Was a fun day out on boxing day tied into visiting family that lived in and around Dagenham for the holidays

First match was late seventies vs Watford aged around 8-9. Remember standing on the south bank with my dad and there wasn’t much segregation so witnessed a few scuffles. I think the game finished 1-1. Anyway, regardless of that I got the bug and nearly 50 years later I’m off to Wembley on Sunday.

I remember that game quite well —very exciting—we should have won by more.
