Podcast / Fanzine Mr Southend- Steve Tilson. Part 1 and Part 2

I never really knew Steve, only to say hello to. His dad Brian i think played with my dad back in the day, a quite formidable team back then.
On the rare occasions my path would cross with Tilly, he would approach me with a handshake and do you know the first thing he would say?
"How's your dad?"

To see Tilly getting emosh about his dad passing, so touching. Can just imagine my old man and Steve's smashing the net in the "upstairs goalmouths" shall we say.

Everyone knows Tilly in Wickford, my missus does, my brother in law etc etc he's just one of those extremely personable people and his playing and management style embraced that no doubt. I'd have loved to play for him, or alongside even !

Really enjoyed watching this.

Tilly as a player is best described as 'cultured'. No great pace, never did like to 'put his boot in', as he admits in this interview but technically very good. A non-league gem of a find for us.

Tilly as a manager..I think he gives a fair summation of what he was about. No great tactician but trusted the players on the pitch to deliver. Watching Freddy Eastwood under his management was a delight at times, although teams worked out in the Championship that if they stopped Freddy, they could beat us and that's why we went down.

In summary...a true Southend legend, both for the club and the local area.

Not sure why he says Chris Powell had a good career at spurs though. Surely means hammers.

Listening to Tilly speak suggests he wasnt a modern technical manager, whereas Kev is more technical. Maybe somewhere in between is the answer.
