In all honesty Phil Gridelet's hair was the best I have seen on a footballer...what was the game he thumped a volley from 25 yards into the South Bank net? Circa 1993/4

I accept your Gridelet and raise the hair stakes with first Andy Sussex and then the obvious Jason Lee.

Our much loved/not loved McDoughnut was another player with a "second" name - not to mention Barry Conlon. :omg:

And I remember Assombalongaagagaga causing a few difficulties with announcers as we toured the country ..........

I recall a Home programme against Scunthorpe many years ago where Scunny had a certain Kevin Geegan playing
"Sorry to be such an Anorak"
This match was played on Friday 15th.August 1969. Southend United 3, Scunthorpe United 0. Attendance 8,763. Playing for Scunthorpe United in the programme at No.8 was KEVIN GEEGAN,(one of two appearances the future Liverpool and England international was to play at Roots Hall). Playing at No.8 for Southend United was the goalscoring supremo BILLY BEST who scored a hat-trick in the match, one of nine he scored for Southend United, a club record.
In goal for Scunthorpe United that day was Southend born Geoff Barnard who played a few matches for the reserves but never made the grade at Roots Hall. He did however play in over 250 league & cup matches for Scunthorpe United.

I remember reading an interview with Keegan when he said something along the lines of Roots Hall being the Wembley of the fourth division. Can't imagine anything like that being said now unfortunately.

I have it in my memory bank that Percy (perry-misprint in programme) groves once stuck a few past us whilst playing for the scum...anyone else remember this?

Might possibly have been a 1-1 draw with Oldham. Stuart Barlow scored for Oldham. That was my first game at Roots Hall. Can’t remember if it was Gridelet or Coubault? I was fairly young so apologies for being vague.

Not at the game but my big broth was and I have that prog. In the loft will route it out sometime. If my memory serves me correctly Ray Clemence was also palying for Scunny (they spelt that one correctly!).

Please see my previous post regarding the Scunthorpe United goalkeeper. Ray Clemence signed for Liverpool in the summer of 1967 for £15,000 and was understudy to Tommy Lawrence(RIP)for a couple of seasons before forcing his way into the first team. Ray's debut for Liverpool was in a league cup tie against Swansea Town(?) in Sept.1968. He then became 1st.choice keeper towards the latter part of the 1969-70 season making 14 appearances. However, I do believe that Ray played for Scunthorpe United at Roots Hall in our relegation season of 1965-66? He also played for Liverpool in both F.A.Cup ties against us in 1978-79.

That would have been the match Keegam referred to in his Biog when he called RH the Wembley of the lower divisions.

He also referenced us in his later years too, When Manager at Newcastle he said "when I came here our rivals were Southend United , now its Manchester United "

You are correct,Dave.Having been selected for the original, postponed fixture 9/4/66,he was called in as a late replacement for Jeff Sidebottom 13/5/66. In our first ever relegation season,he was one of five visiting keepers to keep clean sheets:the others were Ron Swan,Maurice Swann,Brian Powney and Alex Stepney.

I believe that refers to criticism from Newcastle fans to the sale of Andy Cole to Manchester United and links back to our game against Newcastle that saw Ardilles get the chop and the arrival of Keegan.

And didn't Andy Cole score for Bristol City against us (North Bank end I think) shortly before his move to Newcastle as well?
