Midweek breaks

chadded

Not striking since 2004
I'm back in February, and as I'm looking to go away for a few days with the girlfriend in the February half term while shes off school, probably a Monday to Friday job. Been looking at places like Rekjavik, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and or Helsinki. Anyone been to any of theses places and recommend them for a mini break?

Any help is much appreciated.

Steve

Scandanavia is all very expensive - £8 a pint in Reykjavik when I went and that was £12 years ago. Loved it there though - if you go try & get a daytrip out to the Blue Lagoon, an outdoor (man-made) geothermal spring you can swim in!

I'd still recommend Oslo for a break its divided (the main city ) into the buisness and more social side , its not threating and yes teh beers expensive but you can still have a good night out . Bergen on teh other hand you might want to take a brolly ;)

Rekjavik is not a bad option - it's one of the few places where the local currency isn't kicking Sterling to smithereens.

All of those places are going to be pretty darn cold in February though, Chadded! You could head for sunnier climes...? Nowhere in Europe is going to be toasty, although I went to Lisbon in the first week of Feb and was lucky enough to be basking in 20 deg C. Made a change from cold old Blighty!

It would appear that the likes of Ryanair & Easyjet have already programmed in the Feb 2010 half-term dates, as some of their prices (e.g. to Madeira - somewhere likely to be warm in Feb) are eyewatering.

You can get a return from Heathrow to Lisbon with BA for £122 to £133 each, depending on flight times. That looks like a pretty decent price. TAP Air Portugal are £110 to £130, so pretty comparable.

You can get to Madeira with TAP for £151 each return (direct flights from Gatwick) if you fly out on the Sunday and back on the Thursday - don't know if that's possible...? As a comparator, the cheapest return flights to Rekjavik are £225 each with Iceland Express, from Stansted.

Happy booking!

Matt

How old is your girlfriend?

How old is your girlfriend?

6 replies it took for the question to be asked....

She's a teacher, and I want to go somewhere cold. Our last trip was Turkey in July, and Scandnavia is different. Different usually means thoughtful, and thoughtful means brownie points.

Chadded therefore = genius.

I would have asked much earlier but only just got in from work. Sorry it took so long.

Copenhagen is very nice, I have Danish friends and keep meaning to visit but never get round to it.

Unfortunately, been Rome before with an ex. And it ranks as the second biggest regret I have. First being going out with her in the first place.

Copenhagen is lovely; went there just before Christmas a few years ago, including a great afternoon in Tivoli Gardens eating fish and drinking akvavit. Stockholm is also good and has a very high proportion of stunning women; of course you'll only be looking, not touching, but it's still good fun.

MtS's Lisbon suggestion is good, although I reckon that'd be a better option a bit later in the spring. Staying in Iberia, Sevilla is beautiful and well worth a visit.

If you walk into a cafe in Rome and start drinking (i.e more than one drink) for some reason they start giving you free food.

I also went an excellent restaurant (I'll try and dig out the name) where the host provided loads of free dishes after I complemented the signed photo of Rudi Voller hanging on the wall.

Inverness..........stunning city

Then a couple of hours down the A9 for some skiing at Glenshee, Blairgowrie.

The reason Chadded is avoiding sunnier climbs is because when we went away this year, he started white, went red (like his hair) and then back to white again. Except his feet which went orange because the aftersun he used had fake tan in it.

I think Rome is a great idea mate. ha ha ha

Chadded - I have been to all of Scandinavia, I guess not surprising as I used to work for a major Danish Telecoms company.

Copenhagen is good fun with Tivoli, Ny Havn and of course the very Hippy self governing section called Freetown Christiania. Prices not too expensive.

Oslo, smaller then Copenhagen but definitely the friendliest of the Scandinavian countries, although all are friendly compared to London, never met an Norwegian that cannot speak English. Of course you could head for Bergen as it is really a beautiful city, with the fjords.

Stockholm is another pretty place but I am sure it is best enjoyed during the warmer months as it really is a water bound city.

Helsinki was not a bad place but did seem more sparse than any of the above, and definitely has a Russian look about it still..

If you were not in a relationship I would rate the women of the region in the following order; Norway top, then Sweden, and then Denmark.

Of course if you up for some skiing there are a lot of resorts in Norway that offer an Alpine experience.

Also isn't Scandinavia just the Kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden? Whereas Nordic includes Iceland and Finland??
