Mercury Music Prize Nominations 2009

Jedi Shrimper

"Kasabian, Friendly Fires and La Roux are among the 12 acts nominated for this year's Mercury Music Prize.

The Horrors, Florence and the Machine, Sweet Billy Pilgrim and Speech Debelle have also been short listed for the honour.

The remaining nominees are Led Bib, Lisa Hannigan, Bat For Lashes, The Invisible and Glasvegas."

Will find full list and post soon.

Start complaining about who they missed...................NOW!

The Glasvegas album is a great album, albeit a little depressing.

If Florence and the ****ing Machine win it I'll slit my wrists in the name of music.

Let's hope it's Kasabian. Give them the prize then watch them melt into the background like so many other previous winners.

I think Kasabian are rubbish.

would be happy if The Horrors (superb album) or Friendly Fires won.

Only heard the Kasabian album. "Bands" like Le Roux and Florence and the Machine are pretty much flavour of the month without much substance, or I'm just getting old :(

So an album that hasn't even troubled the charts wins........hmmmmmm.

"It's not about the sales, man..."

Well that seems quite predictable given hindsight (as the Mercurys always do).

Bunch of hard working northern white boys win last year, southern urban newcomer addresses the balance the next. Still I couldn't care a less, I thought they were all largely toss.

The Horrors album is good but feels a bit try-hard, La Roux is fun in doses and Friendly Fires are pretty decent, but of the 7 I've heard none grabbed me.

Dizzee seems like a distant memory...

Speech debelle's album is pretty decent, it's on spotify if you care.

P.s. Lauren laverne *schwing*

I think there's always a bunch of NME-esque bands like this each year. It's probably just that we didn't have a yardstick to judge them against and therefore got sucked along with the momentum / hype when we were younger. Now we hear things in the music that remind us of stuff that came out a decade back.

I still get excited about lots of music, it's just that none of it would likely make the Mercurys.

This year has seen The Phantom Band, Future Of The Left, Kong, Micachu, worriedaboutsatan, The XX and SFA all make great British albums which sound very much unlike anything else I've heard.

Portishead should have been nominated and won anyhow, it was their best record yet...

For example, La Roux is a totally likable pop record harking back to 80's electro. It's just that I remember most of that first time around. Likewise The Horrors is an atmospheric, shoe-gazing record; but I was into J&TMC when I was a teenager so (vaguely) remember the real deal. And Friendly Fires are pretty decent, but don't do anything that Munk, Juan Maclean and Cut Copy haven't been doing since 2003.

It's all relative I guess?

Yeah you're right, and the Mercury's have always been about the music on the album and nothing else. I personally thought it should be The Horrors: 1. cos Josh is my mate, and 2. it was such a huge step forward for them... it's been a long time since i've been so impressed by a sophomore album. However the Mercury prize doesn't really work like that. However you're correct that if you want to listen to shoe-gazey, krauty music then you're better off listening to Can, Neu or MBV rather than Primary Colours.

Speech Debelle's album is solid, probably a worthy winner, although I'm definitely going to check out The Invisible's album.

And truth be told, very few artists manage to do something wholly original. Most albums have shades of the past or echoes of former musical greats. Who in turn likely 'borrowed'. 'Primary colours' is a bit leap forward and an album I really rate.

Is it a Mercury Music winner? I have no idea... I don't think even the organisers know what their competition stands for anymore.

worth getting? She was on the cover of the last ever Plan B but i never bothered to read the interview.

Fairly predictable i thought, it's been a few years since a non-guitar based band won.
