Memory Test

First XI
OK - dust down the memory caps.

Who scored the first Southend Goal you ever witnessed.

For me I think it was Ian Benjamin at Brentford in 90/91...growing up as schoolboy in London, I didnt get to too many games before then and amazingly we didnt score in the first 5 games I went too!

So - its Benji for me, and I'm happy with that!

My first game was Notts County away under Dick Bate and we lost 6-2. Think we took the lead via Roy McDonaugh but could be wrong.

1969 - home v Crewe. 2-0 win, Gary Moore got the first and Eddie Baber the 2nd.

Well, Dave Martin actually scored the first goal I ever witnessed at Roots Hall - the equaliser against Birmingham City on Monday 18th March 1991.

However, the goal that got me hooked was the second goal from the Blues that day (1-0, 2-1 up... doo-dah!), scored by "OOOOOh" Bretty Angell... a fantastic cross from the left supplied by, as I recall, Adam Locke - and, in a wonderful slo-mo moment, Bretty leapt into the air like a salmon... and thundered the ball in with his head.

The North Bank erupted, I went bananas with them... and that was it, I was well and truly hooked.

Happy days.

A Steve Phillips Penalty in a 1-0 win over Torquay on the last day of the 84/85 season. This helped us escape re-election on goal difference. No one could accuse me of glory hunting at the time as this remains our worst ever season.

Thankfully Richard Cadette arrived in the summer and things got rather better.

My first game was in the 95-96 season vs Birmingham at home

We won 3-1 but I'm not positive who scored the first goal that day, I think it was Dave Regis

Also in that game Paul Byrne (slim version) scored a blinder, jinking past several players before rifling in a shot from the edge of the box

After that I was hooked
