Saw this elsewhere, apparently it's being looked at at the behest of the tourist industry.

Me? I'm totally against losing the May day holiday, it's the busiest time of the year for garden centres, whereas an October public holiday would be as much use as a cat flap on a submarine!

If it would help the tourist industry so much, then why not have an extra day in October. We already have fewer public holidays than most European countries, so if they can manage that many then so could we.

Totally agree with this. Why not have St George's day(celebrated in Catalonia but NOT a public holiday either)as well as keeping the May day Bank holiday?

St Georges day is already 23rd April, so wouldn't help with the tourism issue, and would just add to a congested holiday period. Indeed, this year it would be on the Saturday of Easter weekend, so most probably carried forward to the Tuesday, giving us then a two day week (The following Friday this year is the Royal Wedding bank holiday)

How about Michaelmas day, probably the least recognised of the old quarter days? 29th September I believe

I nearly always take St George's Day off anyway, but would concede that it's not an ideal time of year, for an official holiday, being so close to Easter. How about St Swithin's Day - July 15th?

6 day's before my birthday with my parents' record for late present shopping? No ****ing chance!

Not if it ****es down thanks.

VE Day
VJ Day
Trafalgar Day
Waterloo Day

I'm quite happy to celebrate our history, and if that ****s off the French, so much the better.

Keep May Day, as that generally falls on my birthday weekend, so it's nice for the nation to celebrate along with me.

Have additional bank holidays in late February, July and October, too, so that working parents can at least have at least one day with their kids in every half term and at least a couple of days in the summer holidays.

Armistice Day or the closest Friday to it (fed up with all the Mondays!!!) but don't see any reason to get rid of MayDay - it's a traditional one. If you're going to give up one of the May ones, then make it Whitsun, very few people have a clue what it is anyway and it's rarely even given its correct name. Besides which the spell from August Bank Holiday to Christmas is the longest (and bleakest) spell in the calendar so makes sense to have an extra day in there.
