How long ago was this?
Does it matter , the fact is within that 6months she was speaking German good enough for germans to understand. They the government there sent her to school to learn, not to be rude but its my belief if one goes to live or work in another country ,especially a foreign speaking country , unless they there to teach the people there English , then they should learn the language.

Yes it was in the 80s, not as if that matters to me

The point being that after the EU was set up, it wouldn't have been legally possible for any one member state to enforce such stringent language restrictions on citizens from other EU member states, intending to emigrate elsewhere in the EU.

There was certainly no such pressure to learn the language, when I first came to Spain to work in 1978.However,it made sense to learn Spanish (and some Catalan) as soon as possible.

(Where the EU has been of fantastic benefit,IMO,is in terms of cutting red tape and gaining reciprocal access to other EU countries health, social security and employment benefit systems).

No it doesn't, I was just asking a question for my own curiosity as I couldn't imagine that being allowed under the EU. I didn't realise it was such a (in)sensitive question.
