Mark Gower: Question

Hi lads just a quick post to ask have anybody heard what Gower is doing is he staying with you or coming with us?? the rumor down here now is that he is signing with us soon but still no news about in the local press only thing Martinez has said is there is to be another 5 signings by the end of the week but no names mentioned?? Thanks lads:)

Says in local paper tonight (and on our OS) Tilson expects a decision either way from Gower very soon. See other Mark Gower thread too.

I guess now he's back from holiday, this is the week he'll sign for you or reconsider & sign again for SUFC.

like you fella we are waiting to hear from the player and club but our local paper has also put blackpool in the frame so its not all swinging in your favour
only time will tell

if he doesnt sign for either swansea or blackpool surely that shows that gower lacks ambition

do we want a player that lacks ambition

Or it shows he has more ambition in the way of getting Southend back into the Championship or maybe beyond, rather than jumping ship to a current Championship club

With Blackpool heavily involved, it'll be a tough decision for him. Let's hope we can compete wage-wise!

As Swansea and Blackpool are both wanting Gower, i think it is rather interesting. Both teams are located quite far away from Southend. Gower is not young - 30 and maybe his thoughts are with his family - are they settled here in the south?

He is a right footed player and can play on both wings which makes it difficult for him because a lot of teams will be interested. I have relatives in Swansea and I see them play a few times. Each time I see them they seem to get some what stronger. IMO, I think Swansea will be the best move away from Southend. They have a good football team and a good stadium. I think they will have a good future ahead of them.

Blackpool however, had a good season last year. Unfortunately I think they will get relegated this year and get back into L1 unlike Swansea.

It would be great for Gower to stay with us but if he were to move I'd like to see him go to Swansea. Especially so I can see him play a few times when I visit Swansea :)

I think Gower will stay. If a championship club in and around the London area cam in for him he'd go, and fair play to him. I have nothing to base this on but he has a young family, he's always been fairly local to Southend in his career and i don't think the two mentioned Championship clubs will be offering massively more money than us. He's been here 5 years and seen great success in that time.

Nice to see someone with the same opinion as me for once lol :)

I put my reflections on the remarks that Tilson made about Gower yesterday on another thread. By what he said I assumed that, a) he was more confident that Mark was going to stay with us. ....or b) He knows that his decision to stay or go is really on a knife edge and was trying to boost him up in order to swing it our way. In all events his comments appear to suggest that Tilson sees Gower as an extremely important element of his side for next season.

I think Gower is gone. He was supposed to tell Tilson his decision by now. The fact that he didn't even tell Tilly he needed more time and was still mulling it over suggests to me that he's decided to go. I hope I am wrong.

I think we as fans often fail to realise how big a decision something like this can be for a player. Even for the increase in wages and a chance to play at a higher level, uprooting the family and dragging them across the country is no flip of a coin.

One of the options is in WALES!!

I think both schools of thought are right. My betting is that Gower wants to go to Swansea, but his family want to stay in the South-East, and so he's got his agent trawling the London clubs for interest.

Sadly for him, Marky G hasn't done enough to impress Pardew and Coppell in recent seasons; and unluckily for him, Palace and Watford are both helmed by dour northerners who are only interested in 6' 2" bully-boys as players. QPR would have been ideal, until they got rich. Fulham would have been ideal, until they stayed up.

TBH, unless Ipswich come in for him - unlikely, but not beyond the realms of possibility - then that exhausts potential Championship suitors within driving distance.

Then it's simply a question of negotiating with his missus...

My guess is that it'll take all week, but Gower will have signed for Swansea by Friday... and you can see why; they're in the position now (in terms of size of stadium, size of support, training facilities, progressive manager and Championship berth) that we'll be in in about 4 years' time... and in 4 years' time, Marky G will be past his prime.

From a footballing sense, it's (sadly for us) a no-brainer: if they're interested, Gower should join the Jacks.

Matt

I have heard that Gower likes the odd bet (allegedly) and SUFC have helped him in the past (allegedly) and I wonder if another club would be so supportive.

Whilst Gower has once before shown a willingness to move to another country, he should remember that in Wales they speak another language and burn down the homes of the English.
