Had to happen sooner or later, could prove to be what was needed.Currently out in Spain and can't wait to get back for rest of season. All to look forward to,keep the faith and UTBS

Brown: "I was shocked Conor was sent off. The fourth official said it was never a red card, but the referee ran over to give it."

Sounds like we should appeal it. Still doesn't excuse the poor performance though.

Well that was a load of crap.

Wind was ridiculous and ruined the game really. I also thought that the 442 meant we didn't control the game except for a 10 min spell. Even when we threw the kitchen sink at them we struggled to make decent chances and Clifford's sending off meant we never looked like we'd get back into it.

Bentley - 6 - Decent handling and kicking in tough conditions, however one corner he should have claimed, and the 2nd goal looked his fault. One outstanding save in the first half.

White - 4 - Very poor. Struggled to get forward and his passing was bad

Phillips - 6 - I thought he coped pretty well.

Thompson - 4 - Very poor. His lack of experience showed, and several times he was caught out, including for the first goal I think.

Coker - 6 - Worked hard and some decent attacking play

Timlin - 6 - Looked to control the game and some good tackles

Atkinson - 6 - Twists and turns well, but struggled to produce anything of real quality

Leonard - 6 MOTM - Worked hard, and looked to drive forward on the ball which is the right tactic. Crossing poor though but buried a decent chance

Hurst - 5 - Poor. Didn't get into the game really and crossing wasn't great.

Corr - 6 - A typical Barry Corr performance. Unlucky to hit the post at the end (that would have been probably the greatest team goal I'd ever seen - can't wait to see it on the highlights).

Barney - 6 - Worked hard but a couple of times he looked less than sharp.

Subs:
Fred - 7 - Tried to make things happen, but shooting was off.
Laird - 7 - I thought he linked up well
Clifford - 5 - Sending off looked harsh, but he maybe jumped in (hard to see).

I would have liked to have seen Straker come on to inject some pace, they didn't like it when we ran directly at them. Mansfield didn't look anything special but they definitely coped better with the conditions.

Two hours on a train from Kings Cross to Nottingham in the same carriage as the Pitsea OAPs, listening to the complete works of **** Buttons and reading Stuart Lee with intermittent lakes where there used to be fields on that side of the window and intermittent Internet connection on this side of the window. 30 mins on a local train and 10 mins walk to the ground by a retail park all uneventful and...the best part of the day.

The first half offers a comic element, I guess, and little else. The 4th stand is an ex stand that has been boarded up and is now just a mass of advertising boards that look more like fly posting - the fact they would present their ground in that way has comic value. Their little and large stag mascots look like they were designed by Frank Oz - that's a bit funny. The forcefulness of the wind means every kick of the ball is like a banana shot - that is amusing for a short time then becomes laughable (there is a difference). The fact that the ref has lost his whistle creates comedy when a forward is one on one with Bentley as the Lino waves wildly so he lets Bentley collect the ball before realising there was no sound from the Ref. The fact that the best pass to one of our players comes from the corner flag to Bentley from a very succinct pass - is it amusing though that the pass is from the camera man and he has seen that playing it on the ground is the way to beat the wind but our players haven't? The fact that Corr's first half contributions are to go down in their penalty area twice, and his third is to go down in our area - the last was a bit of a slapstick fall. Luke Prosser queuing up for a half time cup of tea with the shivering fans indicates that the players refreshments are a bit of a joke. I'm clutching at straws though, nothing fun or interesting happened - it was poor quality entertainment and due to inattentive defending we could have been more than 1 down.

Second half is colder and there is the addition of squally rain. They get a second which looked like it went through Bentley's legs. Clifford who was on as a sub gets sent off for a petulant kick for the Ref to momentarily find his whistle. To be fair we did hit the woodwork twice and Lenny bagged a goal on the 94th minute and we could have fluked a point but Southend got what was deserved - nothing. To the fans though that sang unflinchingly through the moment where we went 2 down, freezing their nuts off after travelling all the way to North Nottinghamshire - they deserved more than what was dished up today.

Same as Torquay. Rubbish conditions, and we failed to adapt. The frustrating thing for me was a lack of urgency on our part until it was too late. We showed towards the end we were capable of stepping it up a level - so why didn't we do it until earlier? The midfield today didn't work - we were passing sideways, losing possession, no final ball etc. To be fair Brown made the right subs and Clifford injected a bit of urgency when he arrived. It didn't look like a red to me, but we were some distance away. Equally it was a great touch by their lad for the first goal, and it seemed from where I sat that our keeper didn't cover himself in glory for their second. We need to shake the midfield up a bit - Laird, Payne, Clifford should get more opportunity to start.

Bentley - 6 - would have fancied him to do better with both goals.
White - 6 - was he fit? Struggled with the conditions as much as anyone.
Thompson - 6 - I remain unconvinced about him at centre half - he's not hard enough. Sit him in front of the back 4.
Phillips - 6 - played on the left hand side which doesn't suit him and is not likely to result in his best form.
Coker - 6 - sees a lot of the ball and doesn't do enough with it for me. Not just today.
Atkinson - 6 - energetic as ever, but nothing coming off today.
Leonard - 7 - probably our best player on the day.
Timlin - 6 - spent most of the afternoon picking the wrong pass.
Hurst - 6 - perhaps the one affected most by the conditions, but it didn't happen today.
Corr - 7 - if it wasn't Leonard, it was Corr.
Barnard - 6 - didn't get in on the action first half, but it's fairly obvious that if we can create him chances, he'll do the rest.

Subs
Eastwood - 7 - slow as you like, but should be running at defences in the last 10 mins more often.
Clifford - 7 - an immediate injection of drive into the midfield area.
Laird - 6 - stuck his foot in as usual. Lets see him start the next one.

Cripes. Where to start. Poor, disjointed, no cutting edge, out of sorts. Wanted to go in 0-0 and get the wind behind us for the 2nd half and hoped the team would come out and take advantage of the conditions but a good bit of skill from their striker and it's 1-0. Started brightly again and then went all ragged. We started to apply some pressure once we were down to 10 men and 2-0 down. The subs might have worked ............. if we hadn't conceded a 2nd goal before either had touched the ball. Hit the post and scored in injury time but that rather gives a false impression.

Wind was blustery and at times ferocious. Pitch was semi-pudding like but the same for both teams. White and Thompson were very poor, Phillips poor, Coker okay, Atkinson poor, Hurst poor, Timlin good, Leonard okay, Corr okay, Barney poor and Freddy okay. Clifford poor and I did not see it as a red card. Laird poor.

Even Bentley recieved a yellow card for sharing his wisdom with the referee such was the obvious fustration throughout the team at their inability to play anything like their potential.

I hope the moans aren't increasingly going to be aimed at Hurst. Where would we be without his goals? Ultimately that is not his job so the forwards need to start scoring and soon.

Mansfield deserved all 3 points. Their number 11 looked decent We got what we deserved, Nothing. The wind did spoil the game but it was the same for both teams. Fred looked like he is finished. Thought he was a bit overweight again.

Probably agree with most of that. A very cold and miserable day.

Yes, I am a big Freddie fan. Just think he looked a bit heavy and a yard a slow. I truly hope he can still do a job for us. We really need to get out of this dungeon league.

Trouble Is we need forwards to be consistent. With t he injury/fitness issues of our main 3 strikers its hard seeing this happening. Which is why its unfair to start blaming Hurst as soon as he hits dry patch. That couldn't go on and as I said on another thread scoring goals one after the other Is not his responsibility.

Got what we deserved, nothing. A stale performance from a side that everyone including Brown says needs freshening up.

Wind prevented any good football. Midfield were outfought by a big strong fit team. Clifford's sending off summed him up, reckless. The foul was on the halfway line by the touchline and he didn't need to try the tackle. A block would have done.

Bentley - 5 - One great save 1st half, could have done better with the opening goal and spilt the ball for the 2nd.

White - 4 - Very poor. Looked hapless at times, cost the opening goal and failed to lead as a captain.

Phillips - 6 - Did well.

Thompson - 5 Did ok.

Coker - 5 - Poor going forward.

Timlin - 5 - Hopeless performance and hauled off to save him further embarrassment.

Atkinson - 5 Poor distribution and out muscled by big Mansfield players.

Leonard - 6 Worked hard, lack of quality distribution, took a good shot for the goal.

Hurst - 4 - Hopeless, constantly wandering in from wing leading to no width for our attacks, Has lost confidence to go at a defence.

Corr - 5 - Not working hard enough and fell over a lot. Unlucky to hit the post at the end. Need a spell on the bench.

Barney - 6 - Worked hard had a snap shot graze the post but looks jaded.

Subs:
Fred - 7 - Worked hard but struggled to get any clear shots on target.
Laird - 7 - Worked hard and should be in starting line up with Gomis and Straker.
Clifford - 1 - Sending off was stupid, diving in when a block tackle would had sufficed. He is a proven liability and is not good enough at this level.
Mansfield were a big side and they looked fresher all over the pitch and managed to vary their game with direct play as well as a passing game and we struggled to cope.
MOTM, the 400+ Southend fans who cheered throughout despite another poor performance from a tired looking Southend team going nowhere it would seem.
Ominously like recent seasons where we fall away once the New Year starts.

But spoons Hurst was due a dodgy spell. with the men up top not scoring Hursts loss of form has been more exposed than it should have been. Not Hursts job to score.
