Quote[/b] (Guest @ Dec. 17 2004,09:42)]I think the Maher argument is pointless, lets just say that anybody who genuinely knows about football and what it takes to be a good player at this level will agree that he is class and a superb asset to this club.
What a pile of total puerile drivel!
mad.gif
Therefore this & every other forum on football in the world are pointless.

We are fans, that's what we do.  We geniunely know nothing about football, if we did we'd be supporting Chelsea, last year it would've been Arsenal & before that ManUre.  We'd have a wardrobe full of kits that we could don dependent on who's top of the Premiersh*te.

None of us know what it take to be a good pro footballer, if we did we wouldn't be on this f*cking list, we'd be out training all day to the peak of physical & mental perfection like Tes.

I remember a similar comment by Scriv (
biggrin.gif
) when I originally worked out after 50 seconds of seeing him that Graeme Jones was a donkey.  He used the sanctimonious "those of us who really know......." would see past the actual crap & see the great player.  But even Scriv accepted after numerous arguments & even more appalling perfomances by the great one, that he might have been marginally incorrect!
tounge.gif

Maher is decent enough at this level.  If he'd really had that much class he'd have gone to another club purely because thay'd have paid him shed loads more money.  No problem with that, it's what we'd all do.  But what do we people know compared to you football experts!
mad.gif

Maher has improved as he has got older and as he has adapted to life in the basement. We are better with him in the team than without (at the moment)

Still doesn't stop him being the only person on the playing /managerial staff involved in everyone of the past umpteen seasons including two relegations though (hence the use of the words common Denominator)

Sorry, I disagree. Maher is and always has been class. however he has not over the previous seasons had team mates on same wave lenth as him. My only criticism would be that he should score more.

No, he hasn't. He joined halfway through the Div 2 relegation season.

The 'common denominator' argument is the biggest load of bullsh*t ever. In my opinion (and I can say anything now 'cos opinions are relative) people who subscribe to this non-theory haven't given the reasons for our demise much thought at all.

As this is about opinions, it is mine that my earlier post was misread.
I was not blaming Maher for our demise, merely linking him to it.

However if someone can convince me that Maher had absolutely nothing to do with our performances over the past seasons I will stand corrected.

Wjilst he still doesn't come anywhere near Moody, Pountney etc, he must be doing something less wrong than everyone else we have had recently to be our longest server by a country mile.

I didn't think you were. I was just saying that to link Maher to 2 relegation seasons, when he joined in January of the second one, is incorrect.

Shave his eyebrows according to Steve.

I dunno. It mystifies me but I'll keep defending him to the death as long as he keeps turning out the consistently good performances that he does.

Yes he has a problem with bookings. As a captain he has every right to question the referee but he is learning the hard way when it is time to stop crossing the fine line.

I'll take Kev Maher, with all his baggage, against EVERY other defensive midfielder I've seen in this division over the last few seasons.

Have we had better central midfielders in recent times ? Only Tinkler, who could perform box to box (as it were), but we couldn't afford his wage and Grecian 2000 demands. Of the current crop Bentley has excellent potential to do the same job Tinkler did for us but still has much to learn. Jay Smith may be a fantastic player but it's no good being great if you're injured.

Arrrrrrgggggghhhh!

Can't the Bart Vs Darryl stance be taken with the Maher debate!?
rock.gif
wow.gif

Well the Maher debate will keep raging because people have trouble seeing what a good player Maher is.

Maher is prepared to shed blood, tears and sweat on a weekly basis for the Club, time after time he is prepared to put his foot in and win the ball in the midfield battle. He has a superb array of passing in his locker, and with this he brings in other players to the play. He is a sitting midfielder but still manages to support the forwards. He is the top assist making in the division. Yes he picks up silly bookings but you can't just say stop moaning to the ref. Anyone that plays football gets frustated when a decision goes against you, and he therefore lets the ref no this. Yes he should but he does. And finally, he is the most loyal servet of recent years and with him we play better then without him.

(BTW - The Maher debate is better than the Bart and Darryl debate)

The man who will lead us back to Cardiff this season both in the LDV final (victors) and play-offs (losers), setting us up nicely for next season's rout of the division and another straight promotion the year after enabling us to resume our (un)rightful place in whatever the Championsh*t decides to call itself by then.

What a great servant and a fantastic example to us all.

You know I'm right.

There's only one Kevin Maher. The most underused song ever heard at Roots Hall
Why dont you just ask him out ORM and be done with it?

To paraphrase others on this thread, the Maher debate will contine whilst people can not remember further back than 3 seasons.

I agree we have not had many better midfielders in recent times, but as we have been in the bottom 13% of the professional system for most of that period it hardly makes him Bobby Moore....

He is having a good season, his loyalty is unquestioned (unlike every referreeing decision).

In the away programs each says that this is mahers 6th full season with us but this is his 7th plus half of our div 2 season)
so he has another 2 seasons after this before his testionial!

I think you need to look at the time of the post to realise that possibly CSW had had the odd bevergae when he posted that comment.
