Maher going nowhere says unhappy Ron

Shame to see him go right now as we could do with him to cover McCormacks ban.

Dont think Moussa will be ready to step up and Grant is an unknown quantity.

Overall Maher moving on is the right thing, for me he has been a good player over the last 4 seasons but even with McCormacks dip in form I dont think he should be in the team.

With his experience and at his age its understandable he wouldnt be a squad player so good luck to him at the Southend United graveyard.

Hang on people!

Its a loan deal till the end of the season - nothing about permanent there

He

Not so sure TB.

From the Echo:
KEVIN Maher will today join Gillingham on loan until the end of the season from Southend United.

The move will end the midfielder's 10-year association with the Shrimpers and comes after he recently dropped down the pecking order at Roots Hall.

This strikes me as the same type of loan with a view to a permanent signing that we have arranged with James Walker. By contrast, I expect Hooper to come back, but not Kev.

Good luck Kev, i wish you every success at the Gills just do us all a favour and smack that little s**t Thurgood when you see him :finger:

Its a loan deal as thats all that can be arranged now the transfer window is closed.

I very much doubt Maher will play for us again and the permanent deal will be concluded in the summer.

Its a shame he's gone but I'm sure he wants to be playing at this stage of career and for whatever the reasons are that doesn't look like happening wit us at the moment.

All the best killer!

all the best Kev.. it probably is the right time for a move, he isn't getting games and Kev will never be the kind of player to sit patiently on the bench. however he has been an excellent servant for the club, has been the most successful captain, which is even more stunning when you realise how average he was at the beginning. he is a master at dictating tempo and moving the ball around and if he could have ended a real end-product to his game, and had a bit more pace then he probably would have gone further in the game

Kevin Maher = Legend!

Exactly Scott!!

I wonder if his ego will fit through the door at Gillingham!!

People sometimes mistake egotistical for shy and introverted...

A great player to lose, but he hasn't been anywhere near his true best for us this season. If the club have a shadow of decency he'll get his testimonial.

Blimey. I'm stunned. You have to hand it to Tilly, though - he's ruthless when he feels he needs to be.

For some vintage displays against the Ewes, for being the metronome at the heart of our midfield, for the passing, the passion, the willingness to give his all for our club, we salute you, King Kev.

You will be missed.

no doubt kev has the footballing ability to contribute to the Blues but I think his leadership failed to work with a changed team -

ultimately his status and seniority wasn't enough to command the midfield and his approach was not flexible enough -

good man but somewhere along the line unable to adjust

Well said Sir. 10 years is a long time for a player to stay at one club these days, he was loyal and always stood up to be counted even when his form was poor. Since I started watching the Blues at the start of the 90's he was the best central midfielder I've seen play for us. Good luck at Gillingham and for the future King Kev.

Nothing lasts forever though, and i think the future looks bright for us in midfield, Bailey has the potential to maybe better Maher's legacy if he stays with us, i feel we need a midfielder who will retain possession like Kev did though, maybe Grant is that man. Moussa has the talent but needs some strength i think.

When one era ends, another begins...

I wonder howquickly this happened? I was at Boots & Laces on Saturday morning and Kevin was trying to find a physio, a strange thing to do if he was gone by then.

Is Tilly ruthless? Maher has been out of first team contention but hanging around for a couple of months now.

I'd also take exception to you saying Maher gave his all for the club. Sure, he gave his all in the big games, but performances like the ones against Colchester were the exception not the rule. Most games he didn't play like that, and played with a fraction of that energy, almost strolling through games. Whilst he was an integral part of our double promotions, he was also a massive underachiever for 6 or 7 years of his decade at Roots Hall.

Fortunately he can be partnered at he Gills with Thurgood in the middle and Bentley on the right to do his running.
