Maher going nowhere says unhappy Ron

Nowt on any other sites yet, never did buy that story about the foot. Sad day indeed though if it is the case, and I guess that means it'll be Moussa in the middle with Bailey against Luton?

Good luck to him been a good servant but not up to it this season hope its Grant to partnet Bailey Come on Southend

On back page of today's Echo. Plays for Gills saturday. Still gets a testimonial match.

It all seems like the wrong timing with Macca's form and pending suspension almost crying out for a Maher-recall, but clearly Big Kev has been hanging around Roots Hall lately like a bad smell. It's reminiscent of the way Roy Keane left Manchester United - a great servant to the club, and strong character in the dressing room losing his edge and then raising more questions than answers. If the timing isn't perfect, at least Tilson has acted decisively.

Kevin Maher might well be going out on loan, but make no mistake, our club captain has left the building. Long may he prosper in Southend United's B-Team.

A poor season for Kevin, this one, but I'd like to remember:
  • His input as the most successful captain in our history who saw the club reach 3 Millenium Stadium finals, 2 consecutive promotions and a 1-0 victory over Manchester United
  • His memorable performances against Colchester United (in the LDV semis, and the 3-0 away League victory)
  • His dominance in the 4-0 (LDV) and 5-1 (League) maulings of QPR
  • His two Supporters' Player of the Year Awards
As a player, what has always struck me about Kevin Maher is his continual willingness to receive the ball from his colleagues, even when out of form, and even when the Roots Hall whinge-brigade have been calling for his blood.

They say you only really value something once it's gone, and we've got a sense of that already this season even despite the quality that Macca and Bailey bring to the team.

I wish Kevin Maher nothing but the best with Gillingham, and look forward to seeing him return for a well-deserved Testimonial at a packed-to-the-rafters Fossets Farm.

gutted about this. Watching mccormack the last few weeks has been painful and he will always be serving suspensions. Seen alot of Moussa in the reserves and he is not fit to lick Mahers boots yet alone fill them. What ever went on at the training ground still feel it is a poor goodbye to one of the only loyal players in the game today. Good luck Kevin wish you all the best and will always remember you lifting the league
two play off trophy at cardiff having forfeited your brothers wedding . Will miss your never say die attitude and the fact you always seemed to care about the result which is more then can be said for some over the years. Really hope its au revoir but fear it is the final good bye

Gutted but you have to move on.

He has brought us the good times at Roots Hall and has been a fantastic captain for us, highlight seeing him lift the Play Off Trophy.

All the best.

Only ever- One King Kev!

Thing that gets me is you are all saying how great Maher was! lets look at the flip side

He was part of the 97/98 Relegation side

For around his first 5/6 years at Roots Hall he did more or less nothing!!!

He had a very bad disciplinary record costing us in some games vital points.

Don't get me wrong here people he has been very good over the last few years but lets not get carried away here!

Exactly Scott!!

I wonder if his ego will fit through the door at Gillingham!!

I guess that's always the thing with Maher, Scott. There's no player I can think of who we've had in the past who can split opinion like Kev.

Very true mate though from the first 5 years of the 10 till the second 5 years he must win the 'Most improved' Southend player ever?

Im actually slightly surprised his decline has been so rapid. Someone like Andy Ansah disappeared from being a god to a nobody pretty quick because he relied on pace, and once injuries curtailed that he just couldnt get back to his previous standards. However Kev was never fast and so its surprising how he can go from being best player in our Championship team to not good enough for our league one squad.

However, if the rumours about his recent antics are true it is probably best he is cut from the squad and a new generation of hungry young players, perhaps Grant and Moussa (Who I have NEVER been impressed with yet).

In respect of the comments about his first 5/6 seasons....he is a player that relies upon getting the ball from his teammates, and then using the ball well....but to do that he needed teammates able to give him the ball in the right areas, and then make the runs he was looking for. Therefore it is no surprise to me that he grew in stature when we actually got some decent players.

Im not sure his testimonial will be greatly supported sadly, unless it is the inaugral game at the new stadium....and for whatever friendly that may be, Im sure there would be a massive crowd for the opening and Id probably rather the money goes into the clubs pockets than Kev's.

I was not one of Mahers biggest fans for a long while (In my mind he was the common denominator in all of our bad times) but He has been loyal and an excellent performer over the past 4 or 5 seasons.
Personally I feel he should still be in the side, but Tilly is far better placed and he has obviously seen something which has led to the slide down the pecking order.
Whilst he has always been labelled as Crab like in his almost habitual sideways passing he has the ability to deliver the odd almost visionary ball either to switch play or split defences, I feel that is missing from the team at the moment as well as, unusually for someone who gets so many dissent bookings, his ability to calm things down when its getting a bit frenetic in the middle of the park.
