Breaking News Maher Charged by FA after red card

Don't apologise. I'm not one of these idiots that proclaim football doesn't have rules, it has Laws. Of course it has rules; it just chooses to call them Laws.

Anyway the rules/laws say:

"TEAM OFFICIALS

Where an offence is committed by someone from the technical area (substitute, substituted player, sent-off player or team official) and the offender cannot be identified, the senior team coach present in the technical area will receive the sanction.

Warning

The following offences should usually result in a warning; repeated or blatant offences should result in a caution or sending-off:

  • entering the field of play in a respectful/non-confrontational manner
  • failing to cooperate with a match official e.g. ignoring an instruction/request from an assistant referee or the fourth official
  • minor/low-level disagreement (by word or action) with a decision
  • occasionally leaving the confines of the technical area without committing another offence

Caution

Caution offences include (but are not limited to):

  • clearly/persistently not respecting the confines of their team’s technical area
  • delaying the restart of play by their team
  • deliberately entering the technical area of the opposing team (non-confrontational)
    • throwing/kicking drinks bottles or other objects
    • action(s) which show(s) a clear lack of respect for the match official(s) e.g. sarcastic clapping
  • entering the referee review area (RRA)
  • excessively/persistently gesturing for a red or yellow card
  • excessively showing the ‘TV signal’ for a VAR ‘review’
  • acting in a provocative or inflammatory manner
  • persistent unacceptable behaviour (including repeated warning offences)
  • showing a lack of respect for the game

Sending-off

Sending-off offences include (but are not limited to):

  • delaying the restart of play by the opposing team e.g. holding onto the ball, kicking the ball away, obstructing the movement of a player
    • show dissent towards, or remonstrate with, a match official
    • act in a provocative or inflammatory manner
  • entering the opposing technical area in an aggressive or confrontational manner
  • deliberately throwing/kicking an object onto the field of play
    • confront a match official (including at half-time and full-time)
    • interfere with play, an opposing player or a match official
  • entering the video operation room (VOR)
  • physical or aggressive behaviour (including spitting or biting) towards an opposing player, substitute, team official, match official, spectator or any other person (e.g. ball boy/girl, security or competition official etc.)
  • receiving a second caution in the same match
  • using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or action(s)
  • using unauthorised electronic or communication equipment and/or behaving in an inappropriate manner as a result of using electronic or communication equipment
  • violent conduct
good to see the facts Mick. Makes you wonder how all the other managers in all the league's survive a game as I'm sure they all do lots of the above in every game! To me it seems it's more about having an incompetent 4th official than a terrible ref. I guess we were very unfortunate to get both.

If they start booking or sending off Managers for things like throwing their hands up during a match, there will be more Managers than players sent off each weekend. There's a lot of Managers that break some of these rules every week. So a lot comes down to common sense by the ref and 4th official. Just as an example, and we could show many.....

Caution

Caution offences include (but are not limited to):
  • Clearly/persistently not respecting the confines of their team’s technical area......Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta brake this rule every game. It's a caution offence, but they rarely get cautioned for it. During one game they counted Pep doing it 18 times. He never got a caution.

As supported by clear video evidence the second card was a straight red. That should be overturned as it is clear he did nothing that warranted a straight red.
Had it been a second yellow then probably you can’t appeal. Appeal a red and then get that dismissed and importantly it can’t be turned into a yellow. In which case not just giving a second yellow demonstrates an incapacity to stop and think and make rational decisions.
It’s now open to appeal and if appeal process followed vigorously you soon get to the point where the appeal will be heard not by administrators but an independent panel who won’t be interested in keeping up appearances.
BTW any news re the only serious offence that did actually happen i.e. the surrounding of the referee to get the decision changed? Clearly the referee forgot to include that in the report..another oversight..

Could it be someone else, who couldn't be identified by the officials, did or said something and hence Maher got the card?

By all accounts Kevin seemed hard done by over this particular incident. However, he is complaining to the fourth official throughout every game and these antics of his are probably well known and the officials on Saturday were probably pre warned and singled him out. The best thing for Kevin to do is stop berating the fourth official every minute. It is totally counter productive. Can anyone explain how giving an earful to a fourth official benefits the team. He is not the only coach/manager who does it but it is becoming increasingly irritating to watch whether at a live game or on TV.

Just ratification that the whole refereeing system is broken. Who would want to do that job?
Yes there have and still are some very good refs, but sadly the rest are actually average and in most cases just very poor.
Personally I don't think woman should be refereeing in the men's game, just my opinion so don't shoot me.
Sorry, am loading the bullets, lol!
Rebecca Welch and Kirsty Dowle? The latter well rated at Roots Hall last season; the former a PL ref.
Your reasons why ALL women refs should be denied the men's game, please? Note, the word 'all', as you suggest.
If you reply with the caveat 'most' you've scuppered your own point, no?

He does it no more than most. Less than many. Is Kev being singled out? Possibly given the over reaction.

And it goes both ways- both managers complained the 4th official was constantly in their ear, taking the enjoyment and passion out of the game- or was that the ref? Or both? Do we need 4th officials? Surely someone else can hold up a board?

BTW part of the problem is officials are open to being influenced directly or indirectly- hence the yellow becoming red having been surrounded..

The yellow was because Kev had half of his left foot outside the technical area (as he does for 99% of the time all the time). The 4th official was on his case for the get-go, and because Kev failed to move his foot about 3 inches the ref was "instructed" by the 4th official to card him. I was not at all surprised he got a red, as the 4th official really took a dislike to both managers. I think it was actually Darren or Mark who said something about the penalty, and kev just raised his arms (and all of him was inside the technical area), so I think we had some interesting interpretations of the rules going on, and zero common sense deployed!

And for the record, just because Abigail had a really bad day (with that ******* 4th official yammering on in her ear, a bad day was understandable), it doesnt mean she isnt good at her job normally, as she did come highly rated. Rebecca Welch didnt do any worse than any male refs we have seen (and was considerably better than many). Kirsty Dowle was absolutely spot on, in fact one of the best referees we have seen at Roots Hall for a long time.

It makes zero difference if it is a woman refereeing. I think it might just be a bit threatening for a few of the boys... who just need to get over themselves and grow up a bit. Might be a tad biased, but I do get fed up with the whole macho anti-woman claptrap that has no place in 2024!

As a football fan, all I really care about is whether the officials allow the game to flow, apply common sense and make decisions that are consistent for both sides.

Never going to happen but it would be a wonderful troll if KM turns up for games in future with his wrists shackled down to a chain around his waist, along the lines of prisoners you see in American dramas, to prevent him raising his arms up...

As I say, never going to happen but I think it would make a bit of a statement. :Whistling::Winking2:

I mentioned this rule before. Pep and Arteta put both feet fully outside their technical area many times per game. Nothing happens. Someone counted Pep doing it 18 times in one game when things weren't going well for City in that game, no caution. They do it more when their teams are losing, as they rant and rave at players, decisions, and the officials. Imagine how bad they would be if their teams were near the bottom. And yet down the Leagues, the Managers can do it a couple of times and get booked. It's the inconsistencies of these rules, and inconsistent officials. One 4th official wont mention it to the ref, and another will get a Manager booked.

The Fourth Officials in Pep and Arteta matches are the Select Group referees. They are full-time employees of PGMO limited. A company run substantially by the Premier League. There will be no boat-rocking from them.
