Macedonia v England

VAR is all about endlessly going over mistakes.
Don't particularly want to join in the pro or anti VAR debate but I must say I hve very little time for C4's football pundit Joe Cole,He strikes me as just the sort of person that Samuel Johnson intended his infamous remark that " partriotism is the last refuge of a/the scoundrel."

Yes, it is clearly apparent that you're not big on patriotism.

We beat Italy at home which was good.Ok Italy are not the team they were, but the Ukraine(A),Malta(H) and now North Mac(A) were "iffy".
But we are always being told that the England squad are one of the best in Europe/world
I not sure thats right, but does anybody think so?
A good Euro cup draw will help, but i think we no chance of winning it sadly.
Just watched Englands (U 17) get knocked out of the world cup by Uzbekistan...so my "mood" is not getting better...off for a walk

I must admit, this last international break has been the “worst” in a while, and we still come out of it with 4 points, unbeaten in qualification and unbeaten in 2023.

I’m quietly confident about the Euros, but a lot comes down to the form and fitness of key players. Kane, Bellingham & Stones primarily.

The drop off from Kane to the rest is massive. I’m, personally, not convinced in Watkins, but he has scored goals and has “earned” his chance. But even then with Toney (when available), Wilson, Calvert-Lewin, Nketiah and so on I don’t feel as confident as when Kane is on the pitch.

Bellingham’s drive from midfield was missed. He is a genuine world class star, and I think the handling of him should by Southgate should be praised. I wasn’t sure about him in the 10, I’d rather see him as a number 8, and Foden as a 10, but Bellingham can play anywhere, he is that good. Foden is class, I love watching him play, and a 10 is his best position.

Stones settles Maguire down. Stones is a rolls Royce at centre half. He can do everything and more.

Those 3 are huge, and proved big misses in the international break.

Both performances were poor, as was Ukraine, but that was followed up with an excellent performance vs Italy. Before that, I can’t remember the last “poor” international break.

I agree with all you write BW2, i hope ,expect Bellingham and Kane to be ok for/in the finals.
But our defence, even with everybody fit is some what "iffy".
Sadly i expect as usual that we have one or two main players injured and or more "knackered"....it happens every time which will hinder any chance we have.
Still remember world cup 82 when maybe our best players Keegen and Brooking were in the squad, injured but if i remember correctly only came on for part of our last game v Spain (0-0)...hope everybody turns up fit and not knackered...but im not holding my breath

He's better than Joleon Lescott, although that's not saying him much. At least there are adverts on Channel 4 so we don't have to listen to them butchering the English language for too long.

Agreed.FWIW always thought C4's pre-(ansd post match) commentary goes on for far too long.Suppose that rather begs the question of why I bother to watch it.:Winking:

Southgate knows his best XI and 9/10 spots are locked up. How JWP isn’t getting game time is beyond me. I feel like Grealish really slows us down and we play much better at pace. We aren’t Man City so don’t score Man City goals. I feel like we are one class central mid away and a world class CB away from being the best side in Europe.
