Yep Evans played throughout February and probably kept his place because of the teams upturn in fortune at that time.

Evans had a bit of a mare in the game against Wycombe . His kicking and general positioning was all over the place and put unnecessary pressure on the defence

...and 13 league games.

Evans played in league games from 1st January until the Lincoln game in March and played in over a quarter of the league games.

Exactly, which is why I consider it unlucky that he's been let go. As I said, I liked him. Blimey, even Darryl had some bursts of crazy stuff!

Evans always looked dodgy to me. Had the odd half decent game but his handling was appauling - even when he caught it it looked like he nearly spilt it. Did make a few good saves, but also had a decent amount of the David James' about him when going AWOL outside his box. At the start of the season I thought he'd be the first choice and Morris would warm the bench all season - but Morris has outshone Evans throughout.

Just to confirm how terrible Evans is during the reserve game on tuesday a ball went through to him with a forward chasing it down but even with that it was a simple catch and it was like a bar of soap he had 4 attempts to catch it and eventually it dropped to the strikers feet who put a shot past him and was going in but had no pace so he was able to grab it.

For me Evans is probably a decent enough keeper but I think his confidence has been shot to bits. The defence seem to have lost all faith I'm him and you can't really get that back as a keeper.

So these are the first 5 to leave.
I suspect more will end up going as they are offered contracts that they don't want to sign.
In this league, the youth team keeper should be on the bench - we're not so flush that we can have 2 experienced keepers on the wage bill.

Evans was the GK of choice in preseason.........can't remember now if that was because he signed first.

Choice of GK for who? The fans....think its Sturrock's choices that count. Gave him the no1, played 90 v West Ham if I remember correctly and played the final pre-season game so pretty clear on his choice.

Morris came out the side twice, 1st time for 2 games and 2nd time when we had a great run of results and Sturrock didn't want to change a winning side. Think it showed during this time that we are a strong side when we have a fully fit squad as he was able to name the same starting line-up for quite some time and we looked very solid.

hopefully Evans just lost confidence and a new start will kick start his career again. Though he's had about 10 clubs in about 10 years so maybe this always happens as clubs tend to hold onto good keepers.

My take on it was that Luggy bought two potential first-choice keepers at short notice last close season, put them both on one year contracts and fully intended to release one or the other this summer. I don't think opinions are too divided that, on balance, Morris is probably the better of the two and therefore he's the one staying. I am assuming also that Luggy thinks Bentley is now ready to warm the bench on a regular basis and, if Morris gets injured, he'll bring a 'keeper in on loan.

Let's not forget that both Bentley and Luke Chambers (yoof keeper) come highly recommended having both been brought up through the Arsenal youth system - IMHO Chambers may become our reserve keeper within a year or two as he seems the more highly rated of the two (he had 27 offers when he left Arsenal - including Man City and Liverpool - and chose us!), as the articles below indicate:

Who plays in goal for the youth team on Saturday mornings then ?

Actually, having checked the records, they were pretty even in pre-season, although Evans played thw whole of the only game we actually won. I can't recall or find out who played at Dartford, I have a feeling it might have been a youth keeper, but this is how the rest worked out:

Derby (H) - drew 1-1, Evans 1st half, Morris 2nd half (goal conceded by Evans)
Salisbury (A) - drew 1-1, Morris 1st half, Evans 2nd half (goal conceded by Morris)
Rushden & Diamonds (A) - drew 0-0, Morris 1st half, Evans 2nd half
Eastbourne (A) - won 1-0, Evans
West Ham (H) - drew 1-1, Morris

So on paper, at that time, Morris had conceded 2 and Evans 1, they had both played an equal amount of games. I am just judging on what I saw, and my feelings at that time were that Evans was the better of the two keepers.

I have to agree with Paul Sturrock choice of getting rid of the players, its the right choice to be honest - I would done the same on FM game too lol - wouldn't surprise me if one or two of the player end up at Braintree Town!! its local for them to play!
