Live 8

Now I'm sure most, if not all people, will be watching this at some point. So what are peoples opinions?

My early thoughts:

1) The crowd is about as lively as Barrington Belgrave on dope.

2) Why the feck was that tw*t of a junkie Pete Doherty on it?

3) Has the lead singer of REM been attacked by a mugger with a paint roller?

4) Why do we have to keep watching interviews with Z list 'celebs' by the cheesy Busted loving Fearne Cotton?

I watched it for 30 seconds ... saw Dildo signing with the foriegn chappy and decided to belt out The Ordinary Boys new album to drown out the sound as the folks are watching it downstairs.

Wanna listen to some good music? Subways and Hard Fi albums' are out Monday. Get them.

5) How badly did Dido try to kill the event with her out-of-tune singing?

6) Why didn't the crowd appreciate Ricky Gervais?

the crowd seem to be on loan from Princess Do's funeral except I seem to remember them making more noise at that one.

Fearne Cotton interviewing Razorlight as REM's Man on the Moon started up, oh the perils of live tv!

I can't help but think that this whole event is a complete and utter waste of time. A load of "pop" icons being seen to be doing the right thing by giving their time up to play.

While it is for an undoubtedly noble cause, Africa will remain a bottomless pit for charity money until the crooked dictators that can afford to arm militia groups whilst intentionally starving their own people are ousted.

Here endeth today's sermon.....

I COMPLETELY agree! Don't get me wrong, it's good to see things like this done but I don't think it makes any difference.

Well Muse kicked *** in Paris (watched it on aol site), they played 4 songs and the crowd there were very lively. Much better than London's one, which has been b******s.

shut up Gav, you've been eating too many sausages!

I'm just waiting for Razorlight

and the complaints phone at the BBC is probably melting as we speak.

That was a real slice of TV history being made there by Snoop

and Madonnas just chipped in with "Are you F**king ready London"

They are running about 90 minutes behind schedule so far

Incidentally, I have a pretty decent insight in to why the crowd atmosphere is so terrible. As soon as I saw a crowd shot, I was incensed to see that they had done exactly the same thing that they did for the Chilli Peppers' gig there. About 100 m away from the stage, there is a wall that is manned by security guards.

On the near side of this wall, there is the exclusive VIP type area which, for the RHCP concert at least, was much higher priced because it guarantees you access to the front by the stage. It also means that the only people to get anywhere near the front are those willing to pay about 25% (I think) more and, without being too prejudiced, rich people are generally less inclined to dance around like idiots, sing at the top of their voices and clap along to every song on offer.

This is, of course how it was for RHCP and they may have changed that but I sincerely doubt it. For eveidence of the frustration, wait for an aerial shot and look at the ridiculous amount of ground between the masses and the classes. If RHCP was anything to go by, behind the barrier, they will be dancing about as though they were in spitting distance of the stage but this will be neither seen nor heard from the cameras/microphones set up for the event.

If anyone has teh live in Hyde Park album, this also explains the pretty disappointing crowd noise.

In my book, this sort of ticketing is exactly the reason that Live 8 wil never live up to Live Aid.

UB40: absolute class, hail the kings!

Madonna: still looks great and still sounds great!

REM: great set, great band.

The Killers: awful dirge; I must be getting old, although ...

Snoop Dogg: awesome, even the Beckhams looked as if they were enjoying it!

Razorlight: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ...

Snow Patrol: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ...

Keane: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ...

Robbie Williams: a real entertainer, he certainly woke up the otherwise dull crowd.

They did the same thing for the Robbie Williams concerts at Knebworth. It's all to do with crowd control; the first 2,000 or so get into the front "paddock" (and a special bracelet to let them in and out of that "paddock") and it prevents crowd surge towards the main stage area during performances. I guess a similar thing is being applied here, seeing as no-one paid for tickets anyway ...
