Lionel Messi vs Arsenal

I'm sure all of them will perform well, but I only see one of those players having a chance at getting a winner's medal, and that's Mr Rooney. (Although with the loss of Lord Becks, my pick for the cup has been changed to Germany.)

:nope:England have no chance whatsoever of winning the World Cup.If Rooney's going to get a winners medal he'd better change his nationality pronto to Spanish or Brazilian.;)

Do you have to make your hatred towards your own country so transparent?

I don't hate the English football team or my country. That was an objective, realistic assesment based purely on footballing ability.
BTW I'm sure you'll remember Samuel Johnson's dictum that "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."
Perhaps he was thinking of people like you at the time? :)

England's record in the qualifying tournament shows that they are one of the strongest teams in Europe - you don't score nine goals in two games against Croatia if you're useless. You're dismissing the England team's chances because it's your instinctive reaction to lionize that which is swarthy, greasy, sweaty and fundamentally loathsome.

And I'd rather be a scoundrel than a cardboard cut-out left-wing pantywaist.

Yes but Spain are clearly the strongest team in Europe by a mile.

Remind me again of how England got on against Croatia in the qualifying tournament for the European Championships.

BTW I never said England were useless.Just that they wouldn't win the World Cup which they won't.They'll struggle to do better than make the last 16 and will probably get knocked out at the quarter final stage which after all more or less corresponds to their official FIFA world ranking.

Calm down son, you need a little abusing. And when you make a valid point, rather than referring to England under McLaren, I'll answer it.

I made three points only one of which referred to the Mclaren era.The first was that Spain are undisputably the best team in Europe. The second was that realistic World Cup sucess for England would be to reach the quarterfinal stage which corresponds to their FIFA ranking.Simon Kuper in his recent book emphasises that England in usually reaching this stage in World Cups actually over achieve rather than underachieve. It's the nation's unrealistic expectations which weigh the national team down.

Those aren't arguments, they are merely statements of your opinion. Spain play wonderful football at times but I think they're vulnerable to quick thrusting counter attacks, as the USA proved in the Confederations Cup. To suggest that we have no chance whatsoever of beating them is absurd, when we have sublimely talented players like Rooney who can win games single handed. Also, the climate will favour the northern European teams like Germany, England and Holland who play a high tempo pressing game.

As for Simon Kuper, I find his monthly columns in 442 to be full of tired references to England's 'long ball game' and the brilliance of the Spanish and the South Americans - the usual crap that I expect from people who can't accept that something which is English might actually be rather good. 'Football Against the Enemy' wasn't too bad though.

I was referring to his recent book "Why England lose" which uses regression analysis in order to explain how levels of achievement in football are related to population size and economic strength. It's a fascinating read.

I imagine his sales will be somewhat limited after we lift the trophy this summer.

I think you are giving far too much credence to the FIFA rankings.

Nate Silver's Index is IMO far better and that has England third in the world compared to Spain's second.

It'd be pretty boring if we all agreed all of the time, but even so I was always a little bewildered at how many people seriously thought that Ronaldo was better than Messi. Talent wise there might not be a world of difference in it but in terms of professionalism, willingness to play for the team rather than oneself and application to the task at hand rather than goading the opposition, they are chalk and cheese.

When people talk about Ronaldo they tend to focus on his personal stats rather than how his teams tend to perform with or without him. He may manage impressive goal tallies, but there's considerable evidence both at Manure this season and at Real that he also subtracts to some extent from his teammates in a manner similar to others like Michael Owen.

It's a shame that at international level Maradona seems more interested in shaping Messi after himself than in unleashing him from the right simply to be Lionel Messi. Hopefully a change of coach will at some point address that, though preferably not at England's expense.
