Leigh on Sea Love it or hate it!

but it's cheaper than London. A young couple have just bought next door. They live in Bermondsey. They paid a lot and are spending a lot doing it up. They are as happy as sandboys. It's all relative.

Yes it's relative, but that's part of the issue. Some people buy in Leigh as a second home, or family home and keep somewhere near to London too. This causes the houses prices to skyrocket as they have. It's seen as a trendy area for people who work in London, just as Wilmslow and Alderley Edge are in Manchester.

The people who bought my parents house (worth a lot on Eastwood Road) bought it as a 'weekend retreat' - LOL.

Unless you're earning really decent money then you're priced out of Leigh. Lots of my friends from school (not short of cash necessarily) live in Westcliff or Eastwood or Rayleigh now.

The discussion is about Leigh being 'a top 10 place to bring up a family' - If you're rich, then yeah. If you're not, then no.

If I was starting out I'd be looking at Westcliff. There are some really good family homes between Westborough and Fairfax Drive with a lot of character. You just need to keep your eyes peeled. That is the next up and coming area. I can't live in Kensington which is where I'd like to live as I could not afford a coal bunker there. Horses for courses.

Leigh is lovely when it's nice, been up there today. Some places get a bit above themselves though.

The only people sharing it on my timeline still live at home! When they realise they need to fork out over £350k for a three bed terrace to be near the station, then they'll realise it's not quite that good for raising a young family.

Prices are redic. Me and Em are looking for a 3 bed gaffe in SOS/WOS and it's about an extra 60-100k for a 5/10 min drive down the road! Yeah I know what you mean - or those "on the borders" claiming they live in LOS!

Leigh itself is a lovely area to live in but it is soooooo overpriced and unless the property you have has a driveway then forget even considering moving there. I work in the community around this patch and it is a nightmare trying to park. Shopping wise (as that is what us females like to do) I probably shop more here than anywhere else.

The place is full of people who think driving a leased Range Rover makes you a player.

Great place, use to live in Elm rd,went to school at North st..remember playing on the school field ..zulus v the red coats(us),because of the zulu film...was always the first zulu shot, but never shot when being a "Brit"...thats why we always win the wars!!! As ive written, only 3 good things about "Southend"...the blues, the pier & old Leigh....happy memories

I was born in a flat opposite The Library Gardens (True leigh-ite!), also went to North Street & Belfairs. Have lived near Thames Drive for the last 16 years, and when-ever i go to the Broadway/ Rectory Grove area, i walk. Amuses me watching Motorists driving round the block time after time, looking to park. It's a nightmare!. Park off Belton way & walk in. Trouble is, no one seems to want to walk these days.

Moved to Leigh about 6 years ago when we had to downsize. Really like the place, partly because of the wide range of things to do, all within walking distance for us (we consider Southend comfortable walking distance at about 3 miles).

However, when asked where I live, I tend to say Southend, simply because I don't wish to be associated with those folk who say "Leigh-on-Sea" in a smug, self-satisfied way as though they're Lord & Lady muck, simply waiting for the ohhs and aahs of envy from lesser mortals. I learned quickly after living there that when I said Leigh as a place of residence, people assume we're loaded and ponce about in Chelsea Tractors all day long snorting caviar from the ample bosoms of our many maids, and it got tiresome having to explain that we actually live in a small, 1 bedroom flat.

Anyway, I really like living there and think its a nice interesting place, that I don't see myself leaving.

I grew in Leigh and spent the vast majority of my drunken youth (pre night clubbin) in the Grand and The Carlton and loved every minute of it. I don't think I've been back there in about 18 months or so. The last time I did me and the missus were sitting outside one of the remortgage your house and have a drink wine bar establishments and sat in amazement as a perma tanned 25 year old(or there abouts, you get the picture) pulled up in a lime green Galardo and parked it on a corner of the junction on doubles and just sat there waiting for somewhere to park close to where everyone could see him. Que Mr Parking Attendant taking umbridge at his impudence and threatening to slap him with a ticket. The guy just sat there and waited for it to be stuck on his screen, which the attendant promptly did.

That for me was it. We supped the last of our drinks and wandered off. Me with a chuckle and a smile as I looked around and realised that what I'd just witnessed wasn't actually all that out of the ordinary. The whole place, well the bit between the gardens and The Grand at least, seemed to have it's collective head up it's collective arse to such an extent that it really was quite funny to witness.

I remember when the police had it staked out , they used to sit in the flat above the kebab shop over the road watching all the drug dealing going on in the front bar , before arresting all those involved .

Can you even see into the Grand from there? Why didn't they just sit in the front bar instead. Sounds like an urban myth, we used to say the same thing as kids about the Peter Boat.....like the police would "stake it out" for a bunch of 16 year olds smoking banana skins and red seal......
