Leigh on Sea Love it or hate it!

Leigh was a great place to live and grow up. However house prices are ridiculous for anywhere south of London Road. I can't really see that as being a 'great place to bring up a family', irrespective of how good the schools are and town is.

As an ex resident of Leigh, I must admit that at that time I did regard Leigh as superior to everywhere else, and I now regard that time as one in which I had my head a long way up my rear end

the funny thing is when we got our first house in 1976 when we got married Leigh was the only place we could afford. the hoiuse (20 yds from the Broadway) was so dilapidated it had not sold and the for sale sign had fallen over. We got it for 10% less than the asking price. Then over the years Leigh and the Broadway got "trendy". Now live the south side of the Broadway 100 yards from the Grand. It's a great plasce to live. House prices are silly. We could not afford our first house if we were starting again. Still mortgage rates then were sky high and we never though we could manage the repayments.
I was born in Leigh and apart from uni have always lived in Leigh. It's a good place to live.
A colleague at work has just moved from Hornchurch to Leighton Aveneue. Thinks it's brilliant. 2 young kids. He's over the moon.

My parents moved to Leigh in the early 90s. The house they bought for £100k they sold a few years ago for £650k. The house they then bought for £500k in another part of Leigh they then sold for £600k 2 years later (and that included new build depreciation). It's scary how people have ridden such huge property booms. Fair play though, I think even 20 years ago it was quite clear to see that Leigh had a lot going for it.

It's gone downhill since The Grand closed.

It's a nice place but I can't see it challenging Monaco for a street circuit in the F1 calendar.

What has the Grand got to do with Leigh going down hill , The grand was known for its rank beer and rank toilets .

Leigh Broadway is nice to visit, but not a big fan of the streets to live in personally. Better roads to live in around the area for sure.

the other reason the house was so cheap was that even in 1976 Southend council was bonkers. There was still a plan on the table called the Leigh Road link. This was taking Leigh Road bulldozing it straight through to North Street and joining up with the cliffs taking out the bend round the Grand and Broadway. I remember saying that not even Southend was that bomkers (remember the extension to the ring road was planned to go straight through Clifftown one of the nicest parts of Southend and the planned motorway along the seafront. The other reason I think Leigh is popular is there is no residents parking. If that happens Southend council will kill it stone dead like they have managed with Southend.

Did I tell you I bumped into Mick Norcross in the Grand car park a few weeks ago. Once the knotweed is pronounced dead and buried (which might take some time as it#s so invasive) it'll be all systems go.

It wasn't full of aggressive coked up pricks unlike certain other establishments.
I remember when the police had it staked out , they used to sit in the flat above the kebab shop over the road watching all the drug dealing going on in the front bar , before arresting all those involved .

I didn't say it wasn't full of drugs just that the 'respect culture' and associated violence was absent.

If one more person shares this story on FB I'm gunna scream!!

The only people sharing it on my timeline still live at home! When they realise they need to fork out over £350k for a three bed terrace to be near the station, then they'll realise it's not quite that good for raising a young family.

but it's cheaper than London. A young couple have just bought next door. They live in Bermondsey. They paid a lot and are spending a lot doing it up. They are as happy as sandboys. It's all relative.

Great place, use to live in Elm rd,went to school at North st..remember playing on the school field ..zulus v the red coats(us),because of the zulu film...was always the first zulu shot, but never shot when being a "Brit"...thats why we always win the wars!!! As ive written, only 3 good things about "Southend"...the blues, the pier & old Leigh....happy memories
