Back from the Dead
Interestingly (or not), we didn't actually keep faith in the same crop of players who got us promoted. The likes of Francis, Clarke, Paynter and JCR all had stuttering starts to their Southend careers. Had they been given more time to integrate, we may well have been able to carry over our momentum. In particular, Lewis Hunt should have started the season at right-back ahead of Francis, and had Bentley stayed he'd have deserved a starting place ahead of both the want-away Guttridge and the running-into-blind-alley JCR.
I'd even go as far as to say that Wayne Gray may well have started the season up front, although I'd expect his championship career to have been short.
I see your point, but i meant the squad of players we started our season in the championship with.
I think Clarke and JCR are perfect examples of what can happen if players are stuck by and believed in, despite popular opinion, at the time they have started their careers with the mighty blues.
Still remember Hammell getting a slating and listening to the chorus of bring back Che..... Not sure anyone now would prefer Che to Steve H now.... Maybe if Paynter had been given some extra time.
There haven't been many additions to the squad and a change of manager as with other sides at this end, since the start of the season.
Definitely agree with you about Bentley, however I've always felt his best position is in the centre of midfield where he can drive things. Certainly deserved to be stuck with and offered a decent length contract. Was really disappointed when he left......
Still think Hunt is just a squad player though, very versatile and can do a job, but Francis is the better footballer.
opinions eh?
