league table

col u r only doing well cos no one can play on their pitch, its s**t. their away form aint much better.

I have been looking at the 50 point target for a while, and whilst that is still under the championship form of 2 points a game, I am still optomistic.

At the moment we need 32 points from 20 games, thats 1.6 points a game. Top ten form. Its a tough ask, but I think we can still escape.

One of our guys posted the following stats on our board the other day they make interesting reading.

During the 3pt/win era, and since the Championship (i.e. 2nd Division) has been made up of 24 teams (start of 1988/89), the lowest total that would guarantee survival* is 43pts (last season and 1988/89). The highest total needed was 53pts in 1995/96. The rounded-up average for the period, the median and the most frequently occuring total are all 49pts. Although the picture is slightly complicated in 1994/95 when 4 teams were relegated, and in 1990/91 when only 2 teams were relegated, this makes virtually no difference to the calculations.

* 'guarantee survival' is considered as 1 point more than the highest placed relegated team - obviously you could be actually equal on points but with a better goal difference and/or goals scored record.
