Good programme, I was intrigued by the official welcome the Javeamigos got for their away game. Reminded me of tailgating in the States. Can't imagine it ever taking off the next time Millwall play West Ham though.
Was funny seeing Mike sitting at the head table in the Mayors chambers.
It was absolutely bizarre! We knew that the Almoradi Amigos were laying on a BBQ and a few beers at their local bar before the game but we didn't realise that the Mayor of Almoradi wanted to welcome us to his town in such an official manner! (Almoradi is about 90 minutes drive south, just a few kilometres inland from Torrevieja.) I went to sit amongst the rest of the gathering but was then told by council officials that the mayor had invited me to sit at the head table.= along with the President of the Almoradi Amigos. Both then produced speeches; I had nothing prepared! (I just thought we were going to drink and be merry!) I had to put up with the rest of the lads pulling faces from the back of the room, ever aware of the Sky cameras pointing at me. The speeches went on for twenty minutes or so, with the mayor welcoming us, highlighting how great it was that two sets of fans can come together over a great distance (the Spanish don't travel well) and have a good laugh over a few beers whilst watching football. Then everyone turned to me - I pushed the intercom and announced that "Sorry, Javea are going to win!" Some speech! We were then all presented with momentoes of the town and kept well stocked with beer during the game. Contrast that with UD Altea a couple of weeks ago; they accused us of being "British hooligans" on their website a few days before the game, comparing us with the arrival of a plague. No warm welcome at all. Still, perhaps it's because they knew that we would outbumber them on their ground by 2 to 1!
Good fun ... season re-starts on Sunday; can't wait!
